Natural Acne Remedies: How to Use Honey to Treat Acne

What is Acne?

Acne is an embarrassing problem for many people.  We are all familiar with what acne looks like and almost all of us will have suffered it to some degree in our lives.  But does everyone know what causes acne?

Acne happens when the pores in your skin, often on the face, become blocked.  Sebum, which usually naturally drains away, blocks the hair follicle.  This can be seen through the skin; the sebum turns white and this is what is known as a whitehead.  When the sebum comes into contact with air it turns black and this is what is known as a blackhead.  Sometimes the follicle wall can break and white blood cells will rush in – this is what gives your skin the red, inflamed look so often associated with acne.

Acne Medication

Treating acne, especially with prescription medications, can be an expensive thing to do.  As people are so different, not all treatments work for all people.  It is expensive and frustrating for them to try so many medications, not to mention that it can even exacerbate the problem if particular chemicals in the medication react badly with your skin.

Natural Remedies

Natural remedies for the treatment of acne can be the ideal solution.  They are relatively inexpensive, can be carried out at home and, even if the treatment isn’t the right one for you, the chances are it will not irritate your skin as they only contain natural ingredients.

Honey as a Treatment for Acne

Honey naturally offers anti-bacterial properties; Manuka honey is an excellent choice for this.  These properties in honey will attack the bacteria on your skin that can cause acne to become infected and inflamed.  It also has anti-oxidant properties which help promote skin renewal.  This is perfect as this helps to minimise the red marks that acne can leave on your skin.

How to Use Honey to Treat Acne

Treatment One – After thoroughly washing your face, apply honey directly to the affected areas on your face.  Leave for 10 minutes and then carefully rinse away.  Gently pat your skin dry.  This is the simplest way to use honey to treat acne and it is recommended that you use this treatment first to check that your skin agrees with honey.  Repeat this daily for around 4 weeks to really see the difference in your skin’s appearance.

Treatment Two – Mix honey with some oats to make a paste.  Apply this to your cleansed skin and gently massage in for about 2 minutes.  Do not scrub as you can irritate your skin and worsen the problem.  This treatment works in three ways – the honey will help kill the bacteria, the oats will help to gently remove dead skin cells and the massaging action will help circulation in the skin.  Good circulation helps keep skin healthy.  It is recommended that you repeat this treatment once a week for around four weeks to really see results.

Treatment Three – This combines quite a few different elements.  Mix honey with an egg white, garlic and lime juice.  Make a paste and apply as a facial mask then relax for ten minutes before carefully rinsing off.  The egg white helps combine the elements together whilst moisturising your skin, the honey helps kill bacteria, the garlic reduces redness and the lime juice helps cut through the oil on your skin.  It is recommended this treatment is used fortnightly for around two months to achieve clear skin.

Use Natural Ingredients

When choosing your products for making your treatments make sure that you choose natural, unprocessed ingredients.  These treatments work best if they contain no harsh chemicals which can affect your skin’s natural balance.
