What Are Blackheads?

Blackheads are pores clogged with sebum, dead skin cells, and oil.  When the sebum and dead skin cells are exposed to the atmosphere, they get oxidized and turn black.  Blackheads are also called comedones and are a type of acne vulgaris.  However, blackheads differ from typical acne (pimples) which contain pus.  Due to bacterial actions blackheads may develop pus.  Blackheads most commonly appear on the face but can also appear on the back and chest. 

Causes of Blackheads

Oily skin is the main cause of blackheads, but environmental pollutants and poor hygiene can also result in blackheads.  Further, because blackheads are pores clogged with sebum factors that increase sebum production also increase the likelihood of developing blackheads.  Sebum production is increased due to stress, menstruation, puberty, skin allergy, consumption of certain drugs, immune system disorders, and unhealthy skin.

Most people are aware what blackheads look like, but for those who are unsure look for the formation of small, yellowish or black bumps or spots on the nose, face, and neck.

Fuller's Earth

Rose Water

Rose water is effective at treating blackheads and can be used as a toner to fight blackheads.  After cleaning your face, swipe a cotton ball dipped in rose water across your face.  Use rose water two to three times per day to get rid of blackheads.

Tea Tree Oil

Tea tree oil is an excellent natural remedy to treat skin blemishes.  It also has antibacterial, antifungal, and antiviral properties.  Apply tea tree oil to blackheads and blemishes and allow to dry.  Wash off gently with warm water.  Use tea tree oil every day in order to get rid of blackheads.

Witch Hazel

Witch hazel is a natural astringent that can be used as a toner in order to fight blackheads.  Simply apply witch hazel to a cotton swab and apply it over an blackheads to get rid of them.

Baking Soda

Baking Soda has many uses other than baking and one of them is fighting blackheads.  Mix 2 teaspoons of baking soda with 3 to 4 cups of boiling water.  Drop a towel in the mixture and wring it out.  Place the towel on the face to treat.  Perform this procedure 5 to 6 times per day to eliminate blackheads.

Recipes for Facial Treatments for Blackheads

Tumeric/Coriander Overnight Treatment

To use tumeric to treat blackheads, add half a teaspoon of tumeric powder to one teaspoon of coriander juice.  Apply the mixture to the area affected by blackheads.  Leave the mixture on your skin overnight and wash it off in the morning.

Tumeric & Mint Juice Treatment

Combine tumeric and mint juice and apply to blackheads for 15 to 30 minutes.  Wash the mixture off with lukewarm water in order to fight blackheads.

Oatmeal/Apple Paste

  • 1/2 cup of boiled oats
  • 1 egg white
  • 1 Tbsp. of lemon juice
  • 1/2 cup of mashed apple

Combine all ingredients to make a paste and apply the paste to areas with blackheads.  Leave the paste on for 10-15 minutes.  Wash off gently.  This paste will remove blackheads.

Oatmeal & Rose Water Mask

Mix rose water with oatmeal powder and apply to skin affected with blackheads.  Leave on for 15 minutes and wash off with cold water.  This will get rid of blackheads and prevent infections.

Cinnamon/Lime Juice Treatment

Mix equal parts lime juice and cinnamon with 1/2 tsp of tumeric powder.  Apply to mixture over areas of the skin with blackheads and allow to dry.  Wash off gently with cold water.  Use this treatment for 15 days in order to maximize the effect of removing blackheads.  For best results, leave the mixture on overnight.

Almond/Rose Paste

Combine ground almonds and fresh rose buds with 1/2 teaspoon of milk to create a paste.  Apply the paste and leave on for as long as you'd like.  Wash the paste off with warm water in order to get rid of blackheads.

Honey/Lime Juice Treatment

Mix 2 tablespoons of honey with lime juice and apply to skin affected with blackheads.   Let dry and then rinse off to remove blackheads.

Honey & Sugar Scrub

Mix equal parts honey and sugar to create a perfect exfoliator to fight blackheads.

Lemon Juice & Rose Water Treatment

Mix equal amounts of fresh lemon juice and rose water.  Apply the mixture to your face, leave it on for one hour, and then wash off thoroughly.  Follow this regimen for 15 days to get naturally cure blackheads.

Cinnamon & Lemon Juice Paste

Mix 1 teaspoon of lemon juice with 1 teaspoon of cinnamon powder.  Apply this paste to blackheads in order to treat them naturally.

Lime Juice Treatment

Mix lime juice and groundnut oil for an antibacterial treatment that will prevent bateria from infecting blackheads.

Pomegranate & Lime Juice Paste

Create a paste from pomegrante skin that has been roasted and powdered and fresh lime juice.  Appy the paste to the skin in order to treat blackheads, whiteheads, acne, and boils.
