Natural Ways to Get Rid of Gas in the Stomach

Having gas is normal, but it can be painful and embarrassing. It's only natural to seek out a solution for excessive or painful gas. While you may want to consider over-the-counter medications for gas, you can also try natural remedies for gas in the stomach. These natural gas remedies will help you to get rid of your gas.

Chewing Food Thoroughly

You can have gas from swallowing excess air or when you don't digest your food properly. Both of these causes can stem from not chewing your food enough when you are eating. If you are always in a rush when you are eating, you may not be chewing your food enough.

Be sure to thoroughly chew the food that you're eating. While some may advocate a specific number of times to chew your food--such as 20 or 30--you don't have to go that far. When you swallow the food, there should be no chunks left in it.

Lifestyle Changes

Making a few changes to the way that you use live may be able to greatly reduce your gas. For example, if you eat a lot of canned beans, be sure to rinse them before preparing them or opt for dried beans instead. You can also eat different forms of protein, such as tofu or meat, which may be less likely to cause gas.

Another thing that can improve your digestion and decrease gas is to do light exercise after eating. While you won't want to do anything strenuous after a meal, a brief walk could help move gas through your digestive system.

Gripe Water

Gripe water is a classic natural remedy for gas in babies. The traditional version uses alcohol in addition to other herbs, but you can now purchase gripe water in your local pharmacy. You'll find it with other baby medicines, not with the adult digestion medicines.


If you don't want to buy an over-the-counter gripe water, you can make your own at home. This allows you to know exactly what is going into your baby. Make a tea using crushed fennel seeds and dill. Strain the water and feed the gripe water to your baby. You'll want to make a new batch daily, as the mixture can go sour.

Herbs That Help Gas

Adults may also want to consider using herbs to prevent gas. You can use parsley, fennel, peppermint, anise and dandelion to reduce gas. Simply make a tea that uses these herbs. Alternatively, you can purchase pre-made tea bags that feature one or more of these herbs.
