13 Safe Methods To Naturally Whiten Teeth

One of the main reasons why teeth discolor over time is due to the thinning of the enamel (surface layer) of teeth. This exposes the layer underneath called the dentin layer which has a yellowish tint. Over time, chemicals consumed through food, drink and smoking can seep through tiny cracks in the enamel layer which further discolors the dentin layer, giving it an even greater yellowish hue.

Having white teeth is an easy way to add to your likability factor. Namely, the added confidence of knowing you have a set of pearly whites will subconsciously remove any hesitation to flash smile towards a person of your interest allows for a smoother start off a conversations. A smile is a warm gesture and it shows appreciation of the other person. Added benefits of having white teeth are the fact that it makes you appear more beautiful and youthful. It is believed that this is because the elderly have been more exposed to staining agents and thus possess yellower teeth.

Thus without further ado, if you are interested in whitening your teeth the natural way, here are some suggestions:

Eat crispy foods

Crispy foods help scrape away many of the sugars and chemicals that cause stains and cavities.  It is the sticky kind of foods that make your teeth turn yellow or brown.

Eat an apple a day to keep your doctor and dentist away

Apples have been identified to contain malic acid, which is a chemical that is used in teeth whitening products to liquefy stains.

Eat vegetables like broccoli, cucumbers, carrots and celery

The crunchiness in these vegetables helps get the saliva flowing and helping with reducing  stains and eliminating plaque in the mouth.

Rinse your mouth with water after eating

Rinsing your mouth regularly will help wash away any leftover food debris in your mouth and helps avoid staining and decay. This is an especially good idea if you are away from home and cannot do with a good tooth brushing.

Eat fruits with tooth whitening abilities

Certain fruits act as exceptional, yet simple tooth whiteners or bleachers. Take strawberries, for example, as they are natural whitening agents and one of the common home remedies for whitening and bleaching.

Scrub strawberry onto your teeth or make a sticky paste out of strawberries

Do remember to brush your teeth straight after with toothpaste after rubbing strawberry on them. Strawberries have acids and sugars that can be damaging to your teeth when left for long on the teeth.

Use lemon

Make an adhesive by combining a few drops of lemon and salt. Smear this paste to your teeth with the aid of a toothbrush for a few days to see the outcome.  Like with strawberry, lemon has acids that can soften your enamel and make you more vulnerable to cavities.  Thus, you must brush your teeth with toothpaste shortly after (3-5 minutes should be plenty).

Eat raisins

Just like crunchy veggies, raisins stimulate the creation of saliva. This continuous tooth washing helps rinse the plaque away and avoid deposits of germs. It's probably not enough by itself to whiten teeth but good for keeping them white.

Eat cheese

Even though it sounds a little outrageous, it is believed that eating a bit of cheese after a meal can possibly prevent the onset of tooth decay. This is largely due to its ability to stimulate enamel re-mineralization.

Milk and yogurt have minerals which can make teeth sparkle and cavity-free

These minerals are calcium and phosphorus, which support the re-mineralization of tooth enamel.  You may think that the tough enamel has nothing to do with a white smile, but it does.  It is the outermost layer of your teeth and so, is not just what you see but also serves as a protective layer. When the enamel becomes discolored, it defines the color of your teeth. Refilling the calcium and phosphate that form it will keep it strong and healthy.

Brush and floss

Stopping your teeth from staining is easier than eliminating stains. This is why these widely used tooth maintenance techniques are very important. Brushing and flossing plays enormous roles in aiding teeth to be clean and white. Failing to keep up with these procedures will allow discoloration and the onset of tooth decay both of which cause staining.  There may also be food residue stuck between your teeth and that makes flossing important. What is more, it aids in keeping your gums healthy. Gums may easily become inflamed and swollen when cut in bacteria infested environment. When this happens, it does not matter how white your teeth are at the end of the day if you are in agony.

Make use of baking soda

Baking soda is one of the tooth whiteners that not merely whitens, but also cleanses. It has been used for bleaching and whitening for eras and even before the creation of toothpaste. All you have to do is take a little of baking soda and make a paste by mixing it with some water and a dash of salt. Lay it on your toothbrush and brush your teeth just like you usually do for about a minute. Wash your mouth out well to get rid of all the baking soda. Only do these two times a week for a minute each time as baking soda is somewhat rough and can wear away your enamel.  If you do choose to use baking soda, you may also combine it with lemon juice.

Masticate sugar-free gum with Xylitol

Xylitol is ordinarily used as a sweetener that does not result in a plaque build-up. While the bacteria forming plaque feasts on regular sugar, it cannot ingest Xylitol. It also reduces the effect of pH levels in the mouth and intensifies saliva production. But keep in mind that this alone will not aid in whitening teeth.  While saliva can wash away food and debris, it can also transmit bacteria through the mouth.  This means daily brushing and low sugar intake are just as vital to get the bacteria out once any plaque has been swept away from the teeth.

In my personal experience, natural methods of whitening teeth are only somewhat effective that will only allow whitening by up to one or two shades if done consistently. Too see greater improvements, there are more powerful methods such as using whitening products or seeing a dentist for laser whitening treatment. Be careful though, it is found that having a naturally white shade of teeth makes an individual more attractive to the opposite sex, but having them unnaturally white reverses this effect.
