Hugo was nominated for Best Picture at the 2011 academy awards. It is directed by Martin Scorsese and was his first attempt at making a 3D film.
The film has a comedic feel mixed with the texture of a children’s story with a similar feel of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. Like Charlie and the Chocolate Factory the children in the film seem more grounded and responsible than the adults.
Sacha Baron Cohen gives a strong performance as a bumbling guard in the film. Seeing him play a somewhat reserved character than his normal over the top performances such as Borat and Ali G shows that he has some real acting ability and isn’t simply the shock jock of film.
Visually Hugo as a film can’t be beat. The world of Hugo comes alive and the characters are relatable and believable.
Hugo veers off a bit into a history lesson in early film which is quite intriguing if this interests you but gets a bit tedious if it’s not something that appeals to you. Film buffs should definitely see Hugo on Netflix streaming simply for historic reasons which show the growth of the early film era.
All around Hugo is a well crafted film that can be enjoyed by children and adults alike and will be available on Netflix streaming in November.
