New Showtime Series: Shameless

Shameless hit the Television airwaves on Showtime in the beginning of 2011. This twisted new sitcom became quite a hit with fans of the Showtime station, and Season 2 is scheduled to air on January 8, 2012.

Shameless is unlike your basic run of the mill sitcom story. Instead of a story based on a family that lives in a nice big house, with parents who are doctors or lawyers, and kids that are spoiled little rich kids, Shameless TV show is about real life; something that many more people can relate to in this country especially in this time of economic hardships.

The story line starts out with good old dad, Frank ((William H. Macy), a proud Irishman who spends his days and nights at the bar getting drunk while his 6 children are at home taking care of themselves. Their mother is not in the picture, she took off years ago to be with her female truck driving lover. Fiona (Emmy Rossum) is the oldest child, and the caretaker of the other 5 children (including a baby). Frank spends what little money he gets from social security at the bar getting drunk, while Fiona struggles to keep the utilities turned on, take care of the kids, and have any time for herself.

In comes Fiona’s rich boyfriend, Steve (Justin Chatwin), who wants to wisk her away, take care of her and give her everything she has ever dreamt of, but she feels a responsibility to her siblings and declines his offers. She chooses to stay with her family, struggling to get the laundry done and to keep the toilet running.

The story line only becomes more interesting with the crazy antics that Fiona’s younger siblings pull, the presence of their neighbors, Kev (Steve Howey) and Veronica (Shanola Hampton), and Frank’s new mentally unstable lover, Sheila (Joan Cusack).

The new Showtime series, Shameless, is definitely not for the easily offended or children. This show is packed full of profanity, sex, drugs, and violence, but what else would you expect from a Showtime series?  Despite these things, this series has really captured the attention of viewers, and drawn them in, wanting more and more from ever single episode. You never know what kind of crazy drama will ensue with this show. Season 2 will hopefully prove to be even better than the first, making this series a much loved sitcom with numerous seasons in the future.
