Non-fiction
Non-Fiction (as opposed to Fiction) is a term used to describe materials intended to inform an audience, to the best of the creator's knowledge, of certain subjects while remaining as unbiased as reasonably possible. Such examples include documentaries, magazines, books, audio recordings and websites depending on their content.
Non-Fiction's Reliability
Although non-fiction aims to provide truthful information about the real world, it's not always the case that non-fiction is accurate. In fact, non-fiction is a genre that must constantly be updated in order to keep up with new historical discoveries and thus avoid obsolescence. This is especially the case with statistical records and scientific journals whose readers tend to be highly specialized professionals in major industries.
Non-Fiction As An Art
Much like their counterparts, various styles of non-fiction exist ranging from personal accounts to third-person narratives, with the occasional commentary thrown in to provide context to an underlying theme. Whichever style is chosen, the goal to educate the reader remains the same throughout all non-fictional works. Thus serious authors in this field tend to avoid detracting too much attention from their discussion through entertaining methods of delivery no matter how dull or boring their subject may be.
The Collaboration Between Fiction and Non-Fiction
In spite of their contrasting differences, Non-Fiction can be every bit as fascinating as Fiction, if not more so. In fact, both genres tend to compliment each other quite well; just as fiction authors can research non-fiction to supply their imaginative ends, non-fiction authors can read fiction for ideas for pure research. An excellent example of this symbiotic relationship is the discussion on time-travel, which has a comfortable place in both scientific circles and entertainment films.
