Non-Traditional Engagement Rings

By Edited Aug 20, 2016 0 0

Back in the day, people judged an engagement ring by its size. Big engagement rings were the norm. The bigger the engagement ring, the better. Nowadays, most couples look for an unusual engagement ring that would symbolize their relationship or their individuality. And because of this new trend, there are more options out there than just the big engagement rings of before.

Figural Design

If you’re considering an unusual engagement ring for your fiancé, one option you can look at is getting an unusual design like a figural design. A figural engagement ring is defined as “a figurine for the finger.” The design is based on a pattern that is made to look like the shape of something else.

The most common figural designs are butterflies, flowers, and animals.  Some popular choices are serpents and dolphins which can be made to wrap around the ring’s band without looking weird. Others opt to create the figurine by using gem stones which gives the ring a striking look.

Aside from animals and flowers, you can also have symbols or letters as your figural design.  The designs can also differ in size. One can opt for small figurines to match the size of their fingers. For those who want a flashier ring, you can get a big figural engagement ring.

Mokume Gane Design

Another option for an uncommon engagement ring is the Mokume Gane engagement ring.  You probably have never heard of it as it is extremely rare and is of Japanese origin. This type of ring does not require a gem as it is a mixed-metal laminate with layered patterns that are quite distinctive. It was first used in Japan to create samurai sword furnishings (intricate patterns on the sword sheath and handle).

This type of design was an indicator of social status and wealth back in 17th century Japan and is still is even in America. A Mokume Gane engagement ring is not something that you’ll see in the wares of local jewellers as it takes a special process to create it. Thus, this unusual engagement ring is also very expensive BUT definitely one-of-a-kind.

Hercules Knot Design

A unique engagement ring design can also have a simple design that is not as intricate or complex as the two that were previously mentioned. One such simple yet unusual design is a Hercules Knot. This is an ancient Greek design that symbolizes invulnerability and strength. It is also said to be the strongest bond of love.

Non-Diamond Stones

Aside from these three, one can also go for a non-diamond engagement ring. Some options include:

  1. Combining your birthstone with her her birthstone
  2. Combine the most important stones/crystals based on Feng Shui - Rose Quartz for infinite love, Jade for fortune, and Yellow Citrine to keep the sould powerful
  3. Use Color diamonds. Choose from yellow, red, blue, pink, black, and even chocolate. Just keep in mind that some colored diamonds are processed.

If these options are not what you’re looking for, you may want to try designing one that fits your needs. Creating your own engagement ring will make it more personalized and definitely not the usual sort you see on the street.
