Northern Pike Fishing Tackle
As any good pike fisherman knows, you can't grab just any old rod and reel and set out to go pike fishing, at least not if you actually expect to catch something. If you go out pike fishing with a light duty rod and 6# test line, you may very well hook that pike, but it might just snap the line before you can reel it in. Before you go out on your trip, make sure you have the right pike fishing tackle to increase your chances of success.
First, your pike fishing tackle must include the right rod for the job. Look for a medium or heavy action fishing rod, and use a 10-12# test fishing line with it. This is the size of fishing rod that is recommended for pike fishing.
Now you need to make sure you have the right lures. First you should get some rattle traps. Try using shad in silver, blue or chartreuse. These colors seem to work the best. Other lures to include in your pike fishing tackle box are 7" floating Rapalas. You want these in silver, blue, chartreuse or black with silver. Four- to five-inch spoons work well in silver, gold, red and white or striped. You could also try blue foxes or orange daredevils. Gold and silver Little Cleo's are good, as are #4 and #5 Bucktail Mepps. You can also use large bass spinner baits to catch pike.
If the pike aren't striking your lures, one thing you might want to try is dead bait rather than a fast-moving lure. Sometimes the pike just aren't in the mood to go chasing after their food but will strike dead bait because it appears to be an easy meal. Northern pike will often scavenge dead minnows and other small fish. Dead bait is especially successful as pike fishing tackle during the spring.
Of course, even with the right northern pike fishing tackle, catching a trophy pike is still a challenge, which is what makes it such a fun sport. However, with the right tackle in your box, you will increase your chances of catching a fish that you'll enjoy telling the story about this particular outdoor adventure for years.
