November is National Pomegranate Month – Pomegranate Benefits

November is National Pomegranate Month

November is National Pomegranate Month in the United States so it's a great time to learn about the pomegranate benefits and start adding pomegranates to your diet in the form of fresh fruit or pomegranate juice.

The pomegranate has been a popular fruit since ancient times of Greek Mythology and represented life and regeneration. The cultivation of the pomegranate has a long history in Transcaucasia where many decayed remains of pomegranates dating back to 1000 BC have been found. Pomegranates are a native fruit of the Himalayans of India, Persia, and Europe and are now grown widely in South America, the Caribbean and the United States.

Pomegranates haven't gained the popularity that this super fruit should enjoy with consumers in the past, but it is becoming more understood as health enthusiasts take more responsibility for their own health concerns and recognize that the pomegranate is more of a super fruit than blueberries or grapes.

How to Eat a Pomegranate:

November is National Pomegranate Month

Pomegranates are a hard skinned fruit with small garnet to red colored seeds called arils surrounded by a white pulp and intricate membrane system to keep the seeds intact.

Cut the exterior of the pomegranate with a sharp knife against a cutting board to create two halves and then score each half with the knife always using caution with knives.

Hold each half of the pomegranate over a bowl and use a heavy wooden spoon to tap the exterior of the pomegranate until most of the seeds fall out and into the bowl.

Use the spoon to scrape the remaining seeds from the pomegranate fruit.

Eat the raw seeds of pomegranate alone or added to cereal, yogurt or other recipes to receive all the health benefits of this super fruit.

* Use caution with the juice of the pomegranate since it can stain hands and clothing.

Adding Pomegranate to the diet for health benefits

Pomegranate Benefits

*Pomegranates are known to improve heart health due to an abundance of polyphenols that reduce free radicals that cause illness and disease as well as the body's natural botanical steroid known as estrone.

*High levels of polyphenols have also been known to reduce the risk of some types of cancer such as prostate and breast cancers according to one study as well as these powerful polyphenols have antibacterial and antifungal properties.

*Pomegranates lower the systolic blood pressure due to high levels of potassium and low levels of sodium thereby reducing risk of stroke as well as reducing arterial plaque formation.

*Pomegrante increases the nitric oxide in the blood which is a building block of protein which boosts muscle strength and assists the nervous system's communication with an end result of increased alertness.

*Pomegranates also lower the bad or LDL cholesterol and raise the good or HDL cholesterol so anyone with cholesterol problems can naturally reduce their levels by adding pomegranates to the diet.

*Pomegranate helps osteoarthritis by blocking enzymes that prevent cartilage corrosion.

*Pomegranates can increase the blood flow to the heart and other organs to help the heart function better, helps during childbirth and can also reduce problems of erectile dysfunction, stress and anxiety.

Pomegranates continue to be researched to decipher health benefits and more information will be available once more studies are concluded. Having a well balanced diet that includes many different types of fresh fruits and fresh vegetables can't harm the body and I for one would prefer natural remedies from Mother Nature whenever possible.
