By Edited Dec 15, 2013 1 0

We all know about the multiple nutritional properties of red wine; there are plenty of researches that have proven the positive effects on our heart, cholesterol, and cardiovascular system in general - just to mention a few; but do you know that a glass of red wine will help to rejuvenate and hydrate your skin? Light consumption of this alcoholic but healthy drink will bring many benefits to the human being but it will also make you look younger and more attractive.

Grapes, the main component of red wine has been used for many years to produce creams, face masks, bath, gels and soaps. The great publicity and continuous confirmation of its powerful properties has given the Cosmetics Industry the push needed to venture in a new world: Vinotherapy; have you ever heard this term before? Vinotherapy is a technique in which wine, grapes, vine and even the seeds of grapes are used to perform cosmetic treatments either in cabins, where the raw material (fruit and wine) is used in its natural form or in laboratories, where all the materials are treated and processed in order to develop products such as creams, masks, bath, gels and others.

The use of derivatives from red wine in cosmetic has become extremely popular due to the high concentration of polyphenols (molecule that has 50 times more antioxidant than vitamin E and 30 times more than vitamin C). This form of antioxidant found in wine (polyphenols) is highly effective and widely used to combat free radicals, which cause both aging and the development of diseases that affect our body and health, including those affecting the cardiovascular system and some oncology related diseases.

The properties of the wine and the high concentration of antioxidants make it the perfect tool in the eternal fight against skin aging: fine lines and wrinkles. Scientifics and the cosmetic industry have realized the potential of red wine to improve elasticity and firmness to the skin. Using the benefits that grapes and wine provides to produce skincare treatment is a fantastic idea and hopefully we are a step closer in finding the coveted fountain of youth.

The skin is the part of the fruit that contains more antioxidants. According to the latest research, the use of the grape-derived antioxidant (polyphenols) prevents cell aging, moisturizes the skin, improves circulation of blood in the skin and helps to tone muscles, exerting a rejuvenating effect and a feeling of well-being and relaxation.

Uses of Grapes for Cosmetic Benefits

1)      The fruit: the skin of the grape is very moisturizing, since it has a molecule capable of holding up to one hundred times its volume in water. The pulp is normally used in cosmetic treatments as a moisturizing nutrient.

2)      The seeds: although small, grape’s seeds are highly effective and rich in fatty acids; they nourish the skin and helps water retention in our cell tissues; seeds also provide the perfect exfoliation effect on our skin.

3)      The Skin: the skin of grapes is packed with antioxidants, providing the perfect device to combat free radicals and oxidation. The skin could be considered the fountain of youth and the best weapon against fine lines and wrinkles.
