OSHA Guidelines: Keeping Employees and Work Environments Safe

Employees work to earn money and support their families. They wake up early in the morning and sometimes even stay beyond working hours just to improve their families' way of living. But what if an employee encounters an accident and he was badly injured? Even if the employer funds his expenses, he would not be able to work for a considerable amount of time.

To prevent these situations from happening, an employer should provide a safe working environment for his employees. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) is a federal agency that ensures workplace safety. If you are an employer, here are some OSHA guidelines for employers and employees:

  • The company should have an ample stock of first aid kits to provide medication and treatment to injured employees.
  • Employees should wear protective gear or clothing. This rule is applicable to construction employees.
  • Eye wash stations should be present if necessary. In case an employee's eyes were hurt, he can wash them immediately at a wash station nearby.
  • Respirators should be provided to employees who have dangerous tasks.
  • Employers should instruct their employees about workplace safety, including safety measures, claims, and dangerous substance information.
  • Signs and warnings should be placed in conspicuous areas to avoid slip and fall accidents.
  • A company should have a small clinic to offer medical assistance in case of accidents.
  • The eyes and faces of employees should be protected when performing dangerous tasks.

These are just some of the guidelines that OSHA enforces companies. Under the law, companies that have 50 or more employees are covered by federal employment laws such as the Occupational Safety and Health Act or OSH Act. If the employer failed to observe the guidelines stated above and an employee was injured, he would get double-punishment.
