Oak Extending Dining Table

By | May 17, 2010 | 0 Comments | Rating: 0

At last the oak extending dining table has arrived at our door. We have been waiting for the delivery van since morning. Our many calls to the delivery dispatcher has, I am sure been short of harassment. In order to await delivery of this oak dining table, we have had to cancel all our appointments and stay at home waiting. Our children cannot understand why there is so much of fuss over the dining table. Yes, they are excited too, to be receiving a new piece of furniture, but cannot understand why their parents are so excited. We have had to put our old dining table into storage in our garage and make way for the new oak extending dining table so that it can occupy its new great location. My husband is ready with all of the varnish and tools to work on the oak dining table and make it truly gleam. Our neighbors and friends I am sure are tired of listening to our tales and are looking forward to seeing this table which has been the center of our conversation for such a long time. We just can't wait and the moment has arrived.

Well what is so special about an oak extending dining table? It is special because the extending oak dining table is a family heirloom inherited by my husband from his great grandfather. The dining table is more than 150 years old and was handmade from an oak tree which was grown at home. So much love and care has gone into the making of the table. There are many stories which do the rounds at family reunion parties and sure enough it is always the stories of the great oak dining table that captures the most attention.

My husband's great grandfather lived near the cost in Norway with his family in a very small cottage by the sea. He and my great grandmother had thirteen children and two dogs and many more fowl and birds all living in a one room cottage. My grandfather was good at carpentry and had cut the oak trees next to the cottage and had made bunker beds for all the children and also the dogs. The beds looked more like shelves which fit in very well and this type of bed worked very well because of the cold and such an arrangement kept them warm. Next he made an all purpose table and it was his idea to make an oak extending dining table so that they could use the dining table in its full size when required and fold it when not required. The thirteen children later on moved to all parts of the world and never forgot their dinner time by the candle light on the cold winter days and the hot soup made by their mother and served on the oak dining table. This table has traveled all the way from Norway to Germany and then to Australia and after 150 years we have been fortunate to inherit this legacy which was shipped out from Australia. We are proud and lucky to be the owners of this rich legacy.
