Olive oil is a remarkable gift of nature. It is one of the best natural products for health and beauty. It is protective against several diseases such as heart disease, blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes and breast cancer to name but a few. What's more, olive oil is excellent for your skin, hair and nails. Since it's very unlikely to cause an allergic reaction, it is an ideal natural product for sensitive skin and hair.

This amazing natural product has actually been used on the body for centuries. In ancient Egypt, Greece and Rome it was mixed with herbs or fragrances to create cosmetics as well as medicine. Nowadays, there are numerous beauty products and spa treatments based on olives and olive oil. Who says you can't make your own simple beauty treatments at home?

The Amazing Benefits of Extra Virgin Olive Oil

Not all olive oil is created equal though. Extra virgin olive oil is highly recommended for your beauty regimen (for cooking, too). It is made by simply crushing the olives, without the use of high temperatures or any chemical processing. This means that all the impotant nutrients intact. Cold pressing also keeps the acidity of the oil under 1%.

Why use it? Because it's easily absorbed by the skin and it has a high polyphenol content, which means it also has major anti-aging benefits. This nature's great gift is suitable for all skin types. It is very gentle, moisturizing and soothing, and it has many antioxidant and healing properties. When topically applied, extra virgin olive oil helps reduce the signs of aging with several different actions such as UV radiation absorption, cellular repair and protection against cell damage.

1. Hair Treatment

Dry, brittle hair will benefit greatly from a deep treatment. You can do this on damp or dry hair. Pour 1-2 tablespoons of warm (not hot) olive oil in your palms and apply gently on seperate hair strands. Stop the oil application about 1 inch from your scalp. Wrap your hair in a thick towel and wait. Depending on the dryness and damage it might take more or less to work. You can leave the oil on your hair for 45 minutes up to 2 hours. If you want to leave it overnight you can cover your head with a shower cap. Wash your hair with your favourite shampoo to remove any remaining oil after the treatment.

Frizzy hair can be really annoying, especially for people with natural curly hair when the air is quite humid. Use a few drops of olive oil on the tips of your tresses to make them shiny and frizz free. Be careful not to use too much because it will make your hair look greasy.

This amazing natural product is also a remedy for dandruff and a dry itchy scalp. In this case, you need to massage your scalp with it, preferrably in the evening, so you can leave it on overnight. The olive oil-based treatment moisturizes deeply the dry, flacky areas of your scalp and allows them to heal. This will leave your hair oily, so shampoo it in the morning to remove all residue.

Olive oil can work wonders on your hair. The process might be a bit time consuming but it's totally worth it. Your hair will become amazingly smooth and shiny, they'll also have strength and flexibility.

2. Exfoliating

Exfoliation is basically the removal of the dead skin cells on the skin’s surface. This is a necessary process, especially as we grow older because the accumulation of dead cells on the surface of the skin make it look dull, rough and dry. The good news is you can have smooth and glowing skin all year round with the help of this amazing natural exfoliator. This is an extremely easy beauty recipe. You will need three teaspoons of extra virgin olive oil, two teaspoons of honey and about half a cup of sugar or brown sugar. After you mix the ingredients well you call apply the scrub directly on your skin and massage with circular motions.

For a face exfoliator I would recommend a more fine grained version of this scrub, with salt instead of sugar. The process is basically the same. Make sure you dampen your face a bit with warm water before you apply the mixture. Massage as gently as you can for about 20-30 seconds. Avoid the area around your eyes. Rinse with warm water and remove any oil residue with a warm cloth. Add this treatment to your weekly beauty regimen to have a positively glowing face!

3. Stretch mark remedy

One of the most amazing uses of this incredible natural product is as a stretch mark remedy. Stretch marks are visible lines formed on the skin surface. They look like fine scars with an off-colour hue. Although they pose no health risk, they are not pretty to look at either. These fine lines often appear in women during pregnacy, but they can also be the result of rapid growth (in puberty for example), weight gain or weight loss.

This remedy can help you improve the appearance of the existing stretch marks and maybe prevent the creation of new ones. This natural oil is rich in vitamin E which enables the skin to maintain its natural levels of moisture. The antioixidant agents found in it inhibit the action of the damaging free radicals. It also lubricates the skin and help it become more elastic and expand without breaking apart.

Use it warm to massage the affected areas. Massaging is essential because this increases blood circulation. The skin needs time to absorb the vitamins so, if possible, leave it on your skin for an hour. Make this a regular process to see the best results in a couple of weeks.

4.Anti Wrinkle Treatment

One of olive oil's fantastic uses is as an anti wrinkle treatment. Since it has the amazing ability to lock natural moisture in, it can leave your skin firm, smooth and very supple. It also encourages collagen and elastin production by targeting the basic upper layer skin cells and, of course, fights the skin damaging free radicals. Moreover, it can offer long lasting protection as it penetrates deep into your skin and nourishes it.

Simply massage the affected areas with the oil regularly. If it is possible, do this twice a day. It is safe to use to reduce wrinkles and lines around your eyes but be gentle. Remember it takes a while for the skin to absorb it so be careful afterwards not to stain your clothes, pillowcase, etc. Alternatively, you can choose a good quality commercially prepared olive oil cream for your daily beauty routine.

5. Hands and Feet

One more great beauty use of this natural "liquid gold" is as a hand cream for very deep moisturizing. You won't need more than a few drops. This small amount can also soothe crusty cuticles. It is a great remedy for dry and brittle nails; it helps to moisturize them and will restore their flexibility and strength. A great way to use this to your benefit is to soak your fingernails in warm water and then in warm olive oil for five minutes. This sequence will make your cuticles soft and keep them moist for longer and will also make your nails for resilient. The same treatment applies to feet and toenails, as well. Cracked heels can be a problem especially if you wear sandals a lot. Use it on your soles and don't be stingy there. You can leave it overnight and protect your bed sheets by wearing socks. Your feet will be much softer the next day.

3. Apply it as a lip balm to moisturize your chapped lips.

4. Heal a sunburn.

5. Use it as a massage oil. You can also mix it with your favourite essential oil for a more relaxing effect.

6.Use olive oil on your eyebrows and lashes to make them darker and shinier
