Online Accounting Schools as Career aPath?

Have you considered online accounting schools as a career path? If so, have you wondered how the online school would differ from a traditional, on the ground school? In this essay, I will build a contrast between these two modes of pedagogy. The contrast is not to be located in the content of the curricula, but in the delivery of the two forms of pedagogy. The content is virtually the same. Let's look at a sample curriculum.

In both a traditional program and an online program one can look forward to taking courses in business management, accounting, finance, statistics, calculus, economics, banking, business law, as well as standard courses in composition, basic math, and investments. One can readily see that there is virtually no difference in the two programs in this respect. Even if we want face to face encounters with clients, we can do this via SKYPE. Now let's look at the differences.

Online Accounting Schools and How They Differ From Traditional Schools

The basic difference between an online accounting school and a traditional school is that in the traditional program one will physically meet at a specific time and in a specific room on certain days of the week and all of this takes place within an institution in a certain city and in a certain state and country. In other words, the traditional system is bound by space and time and the online schools are not. They are asynchronous. A student can travel the country and keep up with the course. They can turn in assignments at 3:00 a.m. What, therefore, will the student encounter when she goes online?

First, she will encounter a screen that is divided into color coded panels. Each panel represents a facet of the course. The first panel, for example, is The Announcements and here the student can keep up with changes in the curriculum, emergency statements by the administration, polices on plagiarism, on submitting late assignments, on attendance and the instructor's office hours. The student should check this panel every day to find out if there are any changes in the curriculum.

Moving down the monitor on the left side, one will see a button that links to assignments and criteria for acceptable performance. The criteria are expressed in the form of a rubric. The date for submission of the assignment is given and the penalty for late work. The instruction is done in blocks of weeks, usually 7.5 weeks per semester. Then a new course begins almost immediately. There are three types of evaluation. One is participation in the Discussion Thread. Here the instructor introduces a prompt or question regarding the course content and the students respond. Sometimes the instructor will piggyback on a student comment. Ideally, the students should respond to student response. This is the very heart of the course. Nevertheless, there are objective tests to check the student's basic knowledge, the facts and concepts of the course. And to ensure that the student can apply this knowledge, create and synthesize, there is the project requirement, which the student works on all semester. The idea is to simulate the sort of cooperative group work that the students will find in the workplace or industry. The next panel is on the bottom and is labeled as Problems and Solutions. Here, a student can make a contribution to the class by reporting on a discovery she has made in navigation from one link to another. This also prepares the student to take initiative and to become proactive in the course.

As we move into the center section of the monitor we see a panel marked as Discussion Thread and here the instructor introduces a topic by providing a prompt and the students respond. Then, ideally, students will respond to students and to the instructor. This learning process is at the core of the course. If a student does not understand a concept introduced into the course, they can click on Ask the Professor and they will be taken to a screen where they can ask any question related to the course and the instructor will respond in 24 hrs. This is convenient for students because the student could ask the question at 3:00 in the morning and have an answer by 6:00 am. Thus is the power of asynchronous teaching.

Moving now to grading, we see that the grading link takes us to a place where the instructor can see all the grades of particular assignments and also cumulative averages. The student can access his/her averages also but not for other members of the class. This grade layout breaks down the grades students have scored on discussion, on objective tests and on group work. This display of grades is very useful l to the instructor and student alike. In conferences between the instructor and the student, the grades can be referred to and used as a basis of clarification. Most of the time consultation with the instructor is kept private. However, in extreme cases, where there is great conflict between the instructor and the student over the interpretation of grades, a dean may be called in and in cases that have legal implications, legal representation may be present on both sides. This is a rare occurrence, but it is necessary to have a policy in place in the event that such a situation arises.

Ordinarily, it is useful to communicate with the student by email or by telephone if the nature of the meeting is to be kept private. If you use email be sure to select that it is to be kept private by clicking on the bottom button for privatization. Otherwise, the other students may gain gimps at information you had rather not share. If you want to share with a student and not be graded on the quality of the conversation, you can do so in the panel labeled as Student Lounge. Here you are not graded. The value of this panel is that it often leads to bonding of student to student so that they gain support throughout their career.
