What are the employment opportunities for adjunct teachers? One opportunity is availability, another is increased pay and a third is the freedom from the constraints of space and time. In on the ground teaching, the instructor must meet a class in a particular room, in a certain building, located in a university in a certain city, state or country and at a specific time. None of these constraints hold true for online teaching. The courses are often the same in both systems, so it is not content that distinguishes on the ground teaching from online teaching; it is the delivery method. A teacher in an online system is free to travel the world and keep up with her classes--not so with on the ground instruction. A teacher in an online school system can check into his class at 3:00 a.m. and it will still be alive. This is not so with a traditional set up. All the online teacher needs on his travels is his laptop computer. His course is located in cyberspace and can be accessed by signing into it on his computer.

You will make more money on an online system than on a traditional system. The average length of time for a term on a traditional system is 16 weeks. On an online system the average length of time for an online term is 7.5 weeks. And there is no break between sessions in the online system. So, you can make two to three times as much money on the online system as you can make on the traditional system. This is, to most teachers, an opportunity to be sought. Another great advantage of the online system is that you can travel the world and still maintain your course, whether you are an instructor or a student. If, then, we lay out the kind of experiences that an online course would direct, we can see what it meant by the difference of a delivery system. What does a typical run-through of what is communicated on the monitor?

As soon as the instructor signs on to the class, the first thing she will note is that the screen is divided into sections and each section represents a way of communicating the course. For example, the first section at top left is Announcements. Announcements provide a communication vehicle to let students know of changes in the curriculum or an instructor's office hours. Sometimes, too, the administration must make announcements to all students regarding safety issues.

As we move down the monitor we see the panel named assignments. This panel includes lectures and directions for designing and submitting a product. The standards-- the criteria of acceptable performance are given and expressed in the form of a rubric.

The next panel is labeled as problems and solutions. Here the curriculum calls for the students to engage in critical thinking. An example would be for a student to independently make discoveries and share them with the class, such as discovering a new way of navigation from link to link and thus provide a short cut.

The next major panel is called Discussion Thread. This panel is the creation of an interactive community. The instructor will introduce a problem that evokes critical thinking and the students are urged to respond to the student's statements. The idea is to get students to express themselves and to respond to one another.

Grading comes next. Here, the instructor is given great support from the design of the online program. The instructor does not have to call the roll; all this is done electronically as the students sign in. The number of absences affects the student's grades according to a formula. All the grades from quizzes are recorded week by week and there is quite a variety of types of evaluation. The objective tests are timed and students must keep in mind that they must finish the test. Grading records are essential for student-teacher conferences. Most of these sessions are private but there are occasions where the student and teacher are joined by legal counsel or by university representation, such as a dean. If the conference is private, it should be carried out on email, the telephone or in a chat room. Private conferences are often focused on a personal issue, whereas content problems are shared with the class. Some questions, however, require tutoring and this is efficiently given in the online format. For example, the student may have trouble with spotting contradictions. The instructor can refer the student to the study of logic and how contradictions can be recognized. On the other hand, the student may need help with organizing essays and the instructor can refer the student to the tutorial on APA (American Psychological Association). This can be arranged as a tour through the online library.

Not all student participation is graded. The panel, Student Lounge, provides a context in which the students are allowed to share both content and personal issues without having to worry about being graded. The idea is to build an environment that promotes sharing and ultimately increases the probability of bonding. This will lay the foundation for support throughout the student's career, academic and personal.

In reviewing the foregoing, if appealing to one, then one must be aware of the steps to take in order to apply for this kind of work. The steps that seem to work is to obtain a list of schools doing online teaching, sharpening you CV, your cover letter and copies of your transcripts. Send out packets to the schools you favor. When you are contacted and scheduled for an interview, you should prep in advance of the date. Then you will be assigned a mentor and begin your first class. Good Luck!

Teaching online for an online school is great, but teaching online for multiple online schools is even better because the online adjunct income streams can really mount up over time.
