Online Adjunct Faculty Positions

Are you interested in obtaining an online adjunct faculty position? If you have a master's degree in almost any basic field, such as mathematics, history, literature, languages, composition, you have satisfied the first step toward securing an online adjunct faculty position. If you wish to pursue such a position, there is a sequence of steps you must take to go forward. First, secure a list of schools that offer online courses. Do not restrict yourself to the better known schools such as Kaplan, Argosy, ITT Tech, or Phoenix. Thousands of schools across the nation offer what is called a mixed curriculum, meaning that some of the course work can be done online and some on a physical campus. You will go after the online offerings. The Department of Human Resources at University of Texas publishes a list of schools making such offers.

Once you have a list of schools that interests you, write a cover letter and order a copy of your transcripts. You will have to prove you have completed at least a master's degree. You may need to send the school an official transcript when they request it, but you may start with an unofficial copy. Later, you may have to provide notarization of documents to prove your identity, but wait until the school requests such documents. They will probably want to interview you if they are interested in what they see on your transcripts, cover letter and CV. The interview will probably be by telephone. At this point, if they are interested in hiring you they will require you to go through training. The training may last a couple of weeks. When you complete the training, you will be assigned a mentor. The mentor will guide you through your first few teaching on line experiences. If you have questions, be sure to ask your mentor.

Online Adjunct Faculty Positions: Payment Schedule

Usually, you will be paid biweekly. One of the great benefits of the online setup is that you will earn two to three times the amount you would make on a conventional program. The reason is that the average online course is complete in seven and a half weeks, whereas the conventional program takes sixteen weeks. As soon as a course ends on an online program, another session starts. They are back to back. Usually, your payments are automatically deposited to your checking or savings account, unless otherwise indicated. Also, once you are in, you are in. You can count on being assigned to 2-3 courses per semester per school for which you are teaching. It is up to you how much money you want to make and how many schools you are willing to work for, but remember, you are not restricted by space and time. If you want, you can stay home and work in your pajamas. Or, you can click on your laptop while taking in a few rays on a beach in the Bahamas.

So what is the work like? What do you actually do from day to day? Just imagine that you have signed into your class and you take a gander at your monitor of your laptop. You will see a screen that is divided into sections, some color coded. Each section stands for a definite aspect of the course you are teaching. But instead of thinking of what you are doing as teaching, think of yourself more as a facilitator. The first section you come to is called Announcements. Here, you can leave messages for the entire class and you can transmit emergency messages from the administration. The instructor may post office hours and also a statement of policy.

The next section we come to is called Assignments. This section provides lectures, bio, demonstration and assignments with explicit directions and standards expressed in a rubric.

Online Adjunct Faculty Positions: Student Independence

At the bottom of the screen we see a panel called Problems and Solutions. This panel focuses on encouraging the students to note their discoveries and to share them with the class. For example, a student may discover a more efficient navigation or a better way of conducting a search.

The next panel we come to is Grading. This is a total system wherein the individual grades of each student are recorded and averaged. This includes participation and presence in the class. It is not necessary for the instructor to call roll because as soon as the student signs in, their presence is recorded automatically. Each student can access their performance at any time, but only their grades. The instructor has access to all the students. Grading profiles are useful in holding conferences with the students. Usually, these meetings are done in private, but occasionally a dean may be called in to resolve a dispute. In extreme cases, legal representation may be present on both sides. As far as private conferences, these can be conducted via email, by phone and in a chat room. One has to schedule these conferences because they depart from the usual asynchronous method of handling time.

If a student has content questions for the instructor, they can make use of the panel, Ask the Professor. Here, they can get an answer within 24 hrs. The core of the course from day to day is the Discussion Thread. The way this one works is that the instructor initiates a prompt or research question and shares his or her feelings and ideas about it, then moves consideration to the students. The idea is to involve the whole class and to get the students to respond to one another. A final way of sharing takes place in Student Lounge. Here students may share ideas from the course content and also personal feelings and insights. The purpose of this panel is to promote sharing among students and to increase the probability of bonding. This way, students will have a support mechanism at work throughout their professional life. This section is not graded. The emphasis is on sharing and support, not content evaluations.

It is obvious that being an onine college faculty member is rewarding and demanding from the standpoint of the growth new and returning college students can make by earning an online college degree and the amount of work that goes into the academic achievement.

As more online adjunct faculty jobs become available with accredited online bachelor degree programs and accredited online master's degree programs, the more opportuniteis there will be for incividuals with earned graduate degrees to interact with studnets enrolled in online college courses.
