Online Adjunct Teaching Positions: Your First Online

Class

Let us assume that you passed the training with flying colors and now you have just signed in to teach your first class. What will this look like? The first image that our new instructor will notice is a panel labeled as Announcements. In this panel, the instructor will post office hours and relay any messages from the administration such as basic curriculum changes. Sometimes emergency messages are posted in this panel. Therefore, it is important that the students read the announcements every time they sign on.

As we move down the monitor, we come to Assignments

This pattern is followed whether the instructor is teaching online business courses or teaching for online health care degrees. The assignments include lectures and demonstrations and explicit directions. The standards are included in a rubric. Tests and projects are contextual and are spelled out. All tests are timed and the student must realize that if they do not finish a test, they will lose points.

The students are encouraged to make discoveries and to share their discoveries with fellow students. This skill is emphasized in this panel, called Problems and Solutions. The student, for example, may discover a new way to navigate the platform and share this technique with fellow students.

In the center of the monitor we see another phase, called Discussion Thread. In discussion thread the instructor throws out a question for the students to field. In some cases, the instructor will share how he has used he question or concept in the past. He encourages the students to share their experiences. Then he tries to get the students to respond to one another. In case the students have questions, they can always post questions on Ask the Professor. Here questions posed by the students are answered and shared with the class within 24 hrs. If a student wants a private meeting with the instructor, it would be better for the student to use email, the telephone or a chat room. But one must remember that these modes fall outside the asynchronous organization of time in online teaching. Therefore, you must make appointments in real time.

Online Adjunct Teaching Positions: Grading

1. There are many facets to grading in the online system. For example, there are the weekly objective tests, the projects which involve group learning. The student should be made aware that the objective tests are timed and that if one does not complete the test, they may open themselves to penalties. The project method is designed to teach students to work together toward a common goal. The system posts individual grades and averages. The student may view his or her grades whenever they want. These records are useful to instructors and students in planning conferences. In extreme cases, they provide evidence for settling disputes that may escalate into legal conflicts. The next phase is labeled as Tutorials. When the student asks questions that require in depth study, the instructor can recommend tutorials. For example, suppose that a student has trouble with agreement of subject and verb. The instructor can link the student to a tutorial in grammar that addresses agreement of subject and v erb. Or, if the problem is one of learning the online library, then they can be assigned a tutor to guide them in the use of the online library. Or, if the problem is one of avoiding plagiarism, then the tutor can lead them through the use of turnitin.com, wherein the student's essays are compared to similar ones in the millions to check for identical passages. Or, if the problem is simply to follow a consistent format, then the tutor can guide the student through the use of the style manual for MLA Modern Language Association.

The online Program stresses self awareness and sharing of concepts and feelings. So a phase is included to cover this important aspect of development. It is called Student Lounge. Here students can share not only concepts from the content of the course, but feelings one has about the concepts. The idea is to promote sharing and to increase the probability of student bonding. In this way, the students have emotional and conceptual support throughout their career.

To sum up, the online courses are not bounded by space and time. One can stay home and interact with students that are physically located thousands of miles away from them. Moreover, they are not limited by real time. The class may be entered at any time...even 3:00 in the morning. One does not have to travel across the country to engage in learning. All one needs is his/her faithful laptop and they can tune in at any time. The course is in the laptop.
