Online Military Degree
What is the difference between an online military degree and an on-the-ground military degree? Here is the essential point of difference: the online degree is based on asynchronous time and cyberspace and the on-the-ground degree is based on real time. These two modes of curriculum organization manifest in different ways. For example, the traditional mode, the real time orientation, requires the instructor to show up at a particular classroom at a certain school in the U.S. and at a particular time twice a week.
The online orientation has no such requirements; one may travel the world and keep up with the classes she is teaching. The first notation is the large screen section at the top of the monitor on the left side. Here we have Announcements. Announcements display postings about urgent matters, such as a hurricane in some of the regions where students are located. It may also display corrections in course schedules, and the instructor may also wish to post office hours and general policy statements, such as policies on plagiarism or late assignments. The next section focuses on Assignments. Here, the students are challenged by a variety of performance demands such as timed objective tests, research documented essays, demonstrations, group projects, and participation in group discussion threads. The criteria of acceptable performance are indicated via a rubric shaped in the form of a tree, with each branch representing a particular objective.
The next panel, shown at the bottom left of the monitor, is Problems and Solutions. This panel fits with the course objective of teaching critical thinking and sharing discoveries with peers. For example, the instructor may discover a new way of navigating a search and then give a mini lesson to the class on how to use this method.
Discussion Thread naturally follows from the foregoing. A theme is explored such as the comparison of differences in the online format and the traditional format. One could also explore the differences between traditional grammar and transformational-generative grammar. The instructor will toss out a thread and the students will explore where it leads. Here is another: "John is easy to please" converts to "To please John is easy," but "John is eager to please," does not convert to "To please John is eager." Why? If the student has a question for the instructor, there is a panel for that...Ask the Professor. The student can count on a 24 hr. turnaround. Some questions, such as how to use APA effectively, may require tutoring. In this case, the instructor may recommend tutorials. There are many tutorials at the student's fingertips, such as Turnitin.com which scans the student's written assignments and compares the text to millions of like text, calculating a percentage of identical passages and syntax. The student may also have a robot that takes him on a tour of the online library. APA is formalized as a tutorial and this will help the student document her essays. These exchanges are made public to the other students so that all will profit.
Grades come next and in this case the grades are recorded and averaged by the system. This takes a lot of pressure off the instructor. The participation of the student is factored in, as is attendance. The instructor does not have to call attendance. This is done for her by robots as the student signs in. The grades form a basis for discussion and conferencing. Conferencing is usually done privately unless there is contention between the instructor and the student and in this case, there may be legal counsel present, representation of the student as well as the school.
The student lounge is not graded. The reason is that the purpose of the student lounge is to create a context in which the students can relax and feel free to share not only content insights, but personal issues. The hope is that bonding will increase and that students will have as support system available to them that goes beyond the course.
By now, you must have noticed that there are a number of factors that make the online system flexible. This is the upside of online teaching. The downside is that the instructor must master the navigation system. However, we have just gone through the major sections of the platform so that you can see the usual structure. The format that we have explored is similar to but not identical to the one you may draw. All schools have their own format. Those that do not use blackboard may use e-college or they may have devised their own system. After you have taught a couple of courses you will have mastered the system you are using.
Given the advantages of the online system, how would you secure a job using it? It is a simple matter. You can obtain a list of schools set up for online teaching from U. of Texas and then put together a solid CV and a list of references. Order an unofficial transcript of your graduate grades and make several copies. Write a strong cover letter. Put together packets and send ten at a time. Remember, no matter how strong your credentials, it is still a numbers game. If you get a bite, be prepared for an interview. If this goes well, you will be invited to take the school's training.
