Online Teaching Jobs

So how do online teaching jobs differ from traditional teaching jobs? It is not a matter of the curriculum content. Both will include certain standard courses: Math, English, History, Languages, Speech, and Literature. The difference is in the way the courses are communicated to the student. The traditional courses take place in real time, while the online courses take place in cyber time and space. In the traditional course, one has to meet the class at a particular place and at the same time each week. In online delivery, all one needs is a laptop computer and once programmed, the student and instructor can be located anywhere, including Spain, Japan or Argentina. All you need is your laptop and you can keep up with the class. The traditional format, however, does not provide this flexibility; one is bound by time and space. This is the job in brief, but if one has never taught online, more detail would be in order to understand the benefits.

Online Teaching Jobs Symbolized

The online teaching is symbolized on the monitor of one's computer as color coded panels. Each panel represents an aspect of the course. For example, the first panel is called Announcements. The instructor finds this useful when she wants to communicate with the whole class. For example, she will post her office hours and any policies on work to be submitted. As we move down the screen, we come to Assignments. Here, the lectures and demonstration of concepts are given. The standards for the course are expressed in a rubric.

Moving down the monitor toward the bottom, our instructor sees a panel called Problems and Solutions. In this one, the teacher contributes to his peers some valuable insight into the course, such as a new way to navigate a search.


Grading is computerized in the sense that participation, scores on standard tests, projects and attendance are all recorded and averaged. These records are visible to the instructor for all students and each student can see her grades, but not the grades of other students. The records are useful in conferences with the student. It is particularly useful when there is contention between instructor and student. All the conferences with the students are held in private, except in cases where there must be representatives of the administration present or legal representation is required.

In the center of the monitor, the center of instruction takes place. This is called Discussion Thread. The instructor throws out a question and each student is encouraged to respond. The instructor shares not only his thoughts but his feelings and experiences of the question posed. If a student wants to leave a question for the instructor, they can do so in the panel labeled as Ask the Professor. Here, they can get a 24hr. turnaround from the instructor. Sometimes the questions the student raises require in depth tutoring. This is available under Tutorials. For example, the student may need help in grammar, in recognizing singular and plural agreement. In the tutorial they will gain practice in this skill. The student may just want to understand how to use the online library or how to document his written work using APA (American Psychological Association) or to avoid plagiarism with the use of Turnitin.com.

In the next panel, we come to email. Here privacy can be observed, but the instructor must click the button on the screen to hold the session in private. Otherwise, a printed record will be visible to others. The Student Lounge is set up to give the students a chance to share both content material and personal issues. This is a non- graded panel and the hope is that the students will share and bonding will take place. Then the students will have peer support possibly throughout their academic career.

We have explored some of the main features of how the online pattern works, but one must keep in mind that this is a general model and that specific schools have their own way of symbolizing what goes into the making of their courses. But realizing this, the question arises as to how one can be hired as an online adjunct for multiple online adjunct faculty positions. The first step is to locate a list of schools that offer online courses. One such list is available from University of Texas. Here hundreds of schools are listed. The next step is to send each school a cover letter and a CV. Work with about ten schools at a time. If you wait to hear from one school before going to the next, you may tie up your time unnecessarily. If the school is interested, they will then ask for an unofficial transcript, so you better get one ready. You have to establish that you hold at least a master's degree in the field for which you are applying. If the school likes what they see, they will interview you, probably by phone. Then you must go through a training and upon completing the training, you will be assigned a mentor. The mentor will be with you when you teach the first class. He is there to support you. He may intervene at times hold a mini conference with you. He may recommend certain professional workshops or tutorials so that your instruction will grow more precise and comprehensive.

To sum up, the advantages of the online system of instruction is its flexibility. One can travel or relocate and still stay current in a course that is taught online. One is not bound by space or time with online adjunct teaching opportunities. Further, from the instructor's point of view, there is much more money to be made in online courses than in traditional formats. Also, once one is accepted as an adjunct, he can be assured that they same load may be assigned to you session after session. You do not have to worry about having your professional clothes cleaned and pressed so often. You do not have to put extra miles on your car. These are some of the advantages of teaching an online course.
