Online Writing Tips: Avoiding Common Writing Mistakes

By Edited Jun 10, 2016 1 2

Attempting to earn residual income writing online can be both time consuming and frustrating - especially for the novice. In fact most novice freelance writers will quit after failing to earn money online or after earning pennies. Only a small percentage will succeed and an even smaller percentage will ever earn enough money to qualify as a full time or part time income.

Most of people fail to earn residual income writing because they do not have the tools or information needed for success. Others fail because earning income in this manner is a time consuming process that requires a vast amount of patience.

Keyword Research and SEO

As a novice writer, you have to understand one basic principle - you can not simply write an article, cross your fingers and watch the income flow. If you approach writing online in this manner you are headed for failure. However, almost every writer makes this mistake when they try and make money online. Even I made this mistake. In fact this is why my attempts at earning residual income online failed the first two times. And yes, I had to fail twice before I learned this valuable lesson.

Before you write an article online, you have to do some keyword research. In other words, learn what keywords and phrases are being searched for. Keep in mind this process can be time consuming, and can lead to a state I refer to as "keyword analysis paralysis." Once you have your keywords you need to optimize your article using SEO or Search Engine Optimization. In other words your articles must contain the keywords multiple times in your article so the search engine can detect them.

Time is On Your Side

Giving your article time to "grow" on the internet is vital to your success to earning income online. The most common writing mistake is not giving your writing time to be indexed, gain ranking, and naturally gain backlinks. On average, it will take 3 months before anything that is published generates income. Most people will give up before this process occurs, and inadvertently sabotage all the hard work that was invested. You can "help" this process through social networking - but this process can not be forced in any manner.

Quality and Quantity is Key

Writing quality articles will increase your credibility as an online freelance writer, which is important to establish as a novice. And by publishing articles you can earn residual income. However, the more you content you write the more residual income you will generate. You must be willing to invest the time to reap the financial rewards.

Duplicate Content

Some online writers claim they are successful by writing one article and proceed to publish it on multiple sites. It seems logical that this method could increase your residual income earnings, but in fact has the opposite effect. Depending on the site, publishing duplicate content can be a violation of the TOS and can result in you being banned. However, publishing articles using this method can also result in the internet duplicate content penalty which can actually decrease your internet income.

By learning keyword research, SEO, not duplicating content and giving your published content time to grow you will be on your way to earning residual income. Even when you earn your first few cents, you confidence as a writer will increase and provide motivation to increase the amount of content you publish online.

I enjoyed reading this article, it's nice to read that a few things that I am already doing (and not doing) are the right way to go :) I'm glad that I appear to be going about things in the right way!!!! I also found it useful at pushing me further along into my writing career in areas that I haven't quite got a grasp of just yet! So thank you :)
