Opal Rings - Delight in the Wide Variety of Gemstone Choices

By | 0 Comments | Rating: 0 | |
Opal rings are a favorite with jewelry fans for a number of reasons. Opals come in huge range of colors, prices and varieties. A small opal ring can be the perfect first gemstone jewelry gift for a Sweet 16 or a significant investment for a special anniversary. Learning about the variety of opal choices and price ranges can help in the selection of the stone that perfectly suits any gift buyer's desires and pocketbook.

The most reasonably priced opals are the common white stones, sometimes referred to as milky opals. Most jewelry buyers have seen these stones with their almost transparent white base complimented by rainbow color hues. There are also synthetic or imitation stones that are inexpensive however these stones have a more glass-like appearance and the color hues are more structured than the random color flashes found in real stones.

Doublet or triplet opals are a combination of real stones and fabricated materials. Generally the real stone is glued to a darker manufactured background stone like ironstone. The doublets are meant to resemble the much pricier black opals. The triplets add an additional thin layer of quartz covering the real stone. This does help to protect the gem, as opals can be fragile.

Fire opals are the only opals that originate primarily in Mexico and in parts of South America. These stones have deep orange-red base hues and are valued for their different and stunning appearance. Unlike most other opals, they do not tend to feature other rainbow hues but make up for this in their solid colored intensity.

Boulder and Matrix opals are not as familiar to most jewelry buyers as other opals and tend to appear less in rings than in other types of jewelry. As the name implies, boulder opals are found large stones, most often in ironstone. Matrix opals have the actual opal spread throughout another base stone.

Crystal and Black Opals are the most precious, rarest and most expensive of these gemstones. Crystal opals are transparent and are valued for the multitude of colors that can be found within the almost clear stones. Black opals are cherished for their deep gray to solid black base color and the intense fiery bursts of color flashing within.

Opal rings are available from nearly every online jewelry source. A savvy shopper will spend some time researching the various choices available for his or her price range and will be certain to find a choice that delights and satisfies.
