Oral B 1000 Vs 5000 - What's the Difference Between the Oral B Pro 1000 & 5000?

By Edited Nov 13, 2013 0 0

Should I Buy an Oral B 1000 or 5000?

Are you debating whether to go for either the Oral B 1000 or the Oral B 5000 (each mode is pretty much at opposite ends of the spectrum -- where we are essentially comparing the basic model with the premium version)? If yes, then you have come to the right comparison overview -- where will look to see whether the difference in their price tags (where the 5000 being roughly double the price of the 10000) is worth it (in both respects) -- as well as identifying which model offers the best overall value (furthermore, which model is best suited to your oral - teeth & gum - cleaning needs).

Fitted Technology

Precision 1000: 'Basic' Pulsating & Oscillation - 3D Technology |

Precision 5000: 'Advanced' Pulsating & Oscillation - 3D Technology |

As you can see the 3D 'fitted technology' somewhat differs from one another -- both offer 8,800 oscillations & rotations every minute to wipe away stains, broken up plaque etc. however the 5000 offers double the amount of pulsations (1000: 20,000 pulsations per minute compared to the 5000: 40,000 pulsations per minute) -- this in turn means that the 5000 offers a superior cleaning experience (clinically proven where - the 1000 effectively removes 97% of harmful plaque whereas the 5000 destroys up to 99.7%, hence preventing gingivitis - gum inflammation - developing and/or reversing it). The 3D technology is just to describe the three processes: pulsating, oscillating & rotating.

Important Note: it has also been proven throughout several independent clinical studies (e.g. Robinson et al., 2005) that the Oral B power brushes have been superior to both other electric toothbrushes as well as manual brushes in all aspects of oral care.

Cleaning Peformance

Precision 1000: Reduce Plaque | Whitening | Brushing |

Precision 5000: Reduce Plaque | Whitening (& Mode) | Hard Brushing | Sensitive | Massage | 3x Pressure Control | Deep Clean | SmartGuide

From the 'fitted technology' section above we have already clarified that both are effective at reducing plaque (with the 5000 more so) as well as whitening (within 3 weeks) through the removal of coffee/wine/tea stains etc. They also offer a 'pressure' brushing indicator - to let you know if you are cleaning them too hard (and in essence potentially performing an ineffective and potentially harmful clean) - through cutting out the pulsations (the 5000 also lets you know through a visual on the toothbrush handle as well as on the smart guide).

The 1000 offers just the basic cleaning mode, the 5000 on the other hand offers four further (customisable) modes to address any specific oral problems you might have:

  • Whitening Mode: acts to polish your teeth, making them 'gleam' more.
  • Sensitive Mode: reduces the power and allows it to be softer when in use -- in turn making it more tolerable for those with either sensitive gums and teeth.
  • Massage Mode: stimulates your gums directly, helping to treat/reverse and prevent gingivitis etc.
  • Deep Clean Mode: this basically extends the 2 minute standard clean to 3 minutes - allocating 45 seconds to every quadrant.

Practical Features

Precision 1000: 7 Days Run Time | Timer | Charge Indicator (Visual) |

Precision 5000: 10 Days Run Time | Timer | Charge Indicator (Visual) | Smart Guide/ Digital Clock |

As you can see the 5000 lasts an extra 3 days from one day's worth of charge (so something to consider for those who travel a lot) and comes with a battery condition gauge, letting you know how low on power it is (and that it is potentially due a recharge). Furthermore, to encourage yet further -- a proper dental clean, it makes sure you go for the full (professionally recommended) 2 minutes with an audible indicator every 30 seconds to let you know to change quadrant -- so you get an equally distributed clean. The 5000 also comes with a wireless (wall mountable) smart guide that acts as basically a visual cleaning assistant ("like having an actual dentist there with you whilst brushing your teeth") -- which is pretty helpful in fairness.

Brush Heads

Precision 1000: Oral B Precision Clean Brush Head | Bristle Indicator |

Precision 5000: Oral B Floss Action Brush Head | Bristle Indicator |

Every Oral B toothbrush has been 'professionally' designed with a specific curvature (like you will see with most dentist equipment) and act to effectively clean your teeth right up against your gum line whilst following the shape of your tooth. With the brush you get an indicator stating when to replace your brush as it may have become frayed etc. (usually around every 3 months).

You will also notice that Oral B offers a wide range of toothbrushes as well with slight differences between them as they are intended for a slightly varying job. For instance the precision clean brush - is as you may have guessed for 'precision' individual tooth cleaning whereas the Floss Action (although doesn't actually replace the process of flossing is intended for more effective plaque removal, to accommodate for gum health but most importantly  micropulse bristles that get to particularly hard areas (like you would with flossing). Note: make sure that your toothbrush is compatible with the brush heads you buy. Others include the ProWhite which has specially designed polishing cup to remove stains, sensitive - that has extra soft bristles.

Conclusion: Should You Buy an Oral B 1000 or Oral B 5000?

As stated above, you are basically comparing the very basic Oral B model - which will provide you with more than decent oral care with the premium Oral model - that offers the very best oral care and is able to specialise and address certain issues and problems with your oral health - which you have to pay around an extra $70 for. Both offer incredibly good value - yet are quite wide apart in the spectrum of oral cleaning quality (and becomes a subjective matter of value).

For me, personally when it comes to health I am slightly on the edge of being a hypochondriac -- so I am more than happy to pay the extra cash to know I am getting that kind of high/professional dental cleaning quality. However, I also understand those who are after pure value (i.e aren't looking to get ripped off but still have a decent toothbrush that will do a good job) - which is what the pro 1000 can offer them.
