Organic Clothing

As more and more people make the push to go green, organic products are rising in popularity. One of the most popular is organic clothing. Although "organic" is most often associated with food, many different items can be made from organic materials, including clothes.

The demand for organic products has spread rapidly across the globe. Consumers seek the word "organic" stamped on all kinds of merchandise including toys, beddings, beauty products, food and clothing. Food and clothing made from organic materials are the most sought after products of environment friendly consumers. It's also become quite a trend to wear or eat organic on special occasions like Earth Day.

What is Organic?

Organic agriculture is defined as an ecological production management system which aims to promote and enhance biological cycles, soil biological activity, and biodiversity. It is based on minimal use of off-farm inputs and on practices that maintain, restore, and improve ecological harmony. It protects the people and the environment by minimizing the effects of toxic chemicals coming from synthetic pesticides which might end up in the air, ground, water, and food supply, and can lead up to health concerns like asthma and cancer. It avoids the use of toxic pesticides, so going organic is good way to protect your health. A major reason why one should wear organic clothing is that organically grown and produced clothing do not involve the use of pesticides and other chemicals. Pesticides are known to cause a range of health concerns in humans, ranging from headaches, nausea, fatigue, neurological disorders, birth defects, and cancer. According to the World Health Organization, poisons coming from pesticides affect at least 3 million people a year with 200,000 of them dying from its effects. The use of organic agricultural methods can reduce our exposure to deadly toxins like pesticides and uses up to 50% less energy compared to traditional farming methods.

What are Organic Clothes?

Organic clothes are functional and fashionable apparel made from organic materials. In our imagination though, organic clothing isn't usually considered very fashionable. It's sort of like a reminder of Birkenstock's optional tye-die design. And if that's the case, then our imaginations have been left behind in the 1970's. Organic and alternative fibers have come a long way since then.

Nowadays, people are very conscious about fashion cycles, and we're now about to enter one which brings humans closer to Mother Nature. Human nature is very concerned about comfort. People feel comfortable being naked, but it's unacceptable to go out and bare it all, isn't it... unless you're on some nude beach? That's why organic clothing is being introduced.

Organic clothes set people into the newest trend and frees them to express with joy, their fashion sensibilities as well as political ethics. Many designers and manufacturers have begun creating clothing using organic materials. Organic clothes are always made out of organic cotton, hemp, bamboo, cotton, soy, and are fair trade certified and fairly priced so you can eco-friendly clothing for everyday living.

Organic Fibers

The demand for organically grown clothing has gone up as consumers are now aware of the negative effects pesticides, herbicides and, synthetic fertilizers have on the environment. Many people switch to organically grown produce to avoid being exposed to the harmful chemicals coming from pesticides, but a few others consider their clothing's source, and how the chemicals being used in fabric production can affect their health.

Manufacturers of organic clothing heavily rely on sustainable manufacturing and agricultural processes when making clothes out of hemp, flax, hemp, organic cotton, and other natural materials. By purchasing these clothes, people can protect their family's health and reduce short- and long-term impact on the environment.

Organic cotton is one of the most popular among all organic fibers. It's grown using materials and methods that have very little impact to the environment. After being harvested, it can then be used to create a fabric which is soft and possessing a texture similar to silk.

Bamboo is said to be the world's fastest growing plant, which makes it naturally renewable. It reaches its maximum height in exactly 3 months and matures in 3-5 years. Its growth characteristics allow it to rapidly spread across big areas, and its cultivation can greatly enhance the quality of soil in eroded and degraded areas.

Hemp is regarded for being one the most environment friendly plants in the world. Industrial grade hemp can produce up to three times more fabric per acre compared to non-organic cotton, and is a considered a natural for those practicing organic farming techniques. Hemp can actually replenish the soil it's planted in; making it richer with essential nutrients compared to before the hemp was planted. It also grows extremely fast, so it's an excellent crop in terms of productivity for the farmer. But it is hemp's wear-ability and texture that makes it a natural choice.

Benefits of Wearing Organic Clothing

Soil is the foundation of the food chain. The main goal of organic farming is to practice the use of techniques that builds healthy soils; textile fibers have organic alternatives as well. Organic clothing made from materials that have not been chemically treated at any time during the production process has a lot of personal as well as environmental benefits.

Clothing made from original organic fabrics can help the environment in numerous ways and here's a list of reasons as to why that is:

  • No need for chemicals in production

  • No chemical residues to pollute the environment

  • No exposure to chemicals, for humans, animals and plants

  • When the fabric is finished with chemicals, the chemicals are recycled and processed, but not drained into the rivers or buried in landfills.

Sustainable clothing emphasizes the reuse and recycling materials and is part of the environmental awareness movement. Wearing clothing that is both organic and sustainable is sure to mark you as green and environmentally friendly. What's even more fun is when others see how your choice can be oh so wearable, likable and enviable, that they'll go green with envy when they see you in your new organic clothes!
