Organic Skin Care Products
With the growing number of companies using the word 'organic' on the label, it has become increasingly confusing for a consumer to truly understand what they are buying. This purposefully vague word has caused a lot of confusion in the market, and led many slight-of-hand marketing types to 'greenwash' their otherwise toxic beauty products.
It all starts with the fact that the word 'organic' has a number of literal definitions. Any living or naturally occurring matter can rightfully be called organic. Someone could pump crude oil from the ground, mix in some fragrance, liquid soap, and call it 'Organic Crude Oil Body Wash.' Hardly what we think of when we think of an organic skin care product!
Add to the battle over the word organic, a growing list of recurring toxins that seem to be in a lot of the so-called organic products. In my opinion, it is not necessarily what you put in to the bottle, but what you do not put in that is truly important. With the over-reaching petrochemical industry being so present in the industry, it is hardly a surprise that almost every organic product contains one or more suspected toxin. Ingredients such as; parabens, urea, sodium laurel sulfate, parfum, colorants, and propylene glycol, are all known or suspected toxins. Yet there they are in the bottle.
So how do you know what is a toxin free, organic oriented product? Don't look at the front of the label where every company puts there marketing spin on the container. Turn the container and go directly to the ingredient listing. If you see any of the toxins mentioned in this article, beware. But do not despair. You do have good choices. You can go to http://www.russellorganics and see products that are not only toxin free but also certified cruelty free and certified vegan.
The most important thing is to educate yourself as to what the ingredients are and what to avoid. This important first step will be very helpful for you in choosing a natural and effective skin care product.
