By Edited May 29, 2015 0 0

Organic textiles are sought after by many consumers because of the people’s growing concern for the environment. The depletion of the ozone layer, global warming, as well as the other interconnected phenomena brought people together to make efforts of changing the use materials into organic. Textiles are no exception to this. People everywhere are pushing for more environment-friendly apparel.

The clamor of organic textiles is also because of the need for safer types of fabrics that will not elicit the effects that synthetic textiles give as in skin rash, allergies, respiratory problems and neurological disorders. Organic textiles have been found to reduce exposure to toxic chemicals like pesticides present in synthetic clothing materials. Different kinds of chemicals are used in the farming and processing of textiles; from the farming of crops up to the production of yarns and other materials. These chemicals harm both the environment and the health of people and even animals. This is why there is a need to boost the organic textile industry to alleviate the poor environmental situation that is harming not only the consumers but especially those who work with these nasty chemicals to produce the textiles.

 What are organic textiles?

Organic textiles are made from various agricultural products. They are produced in an environmental-friendly manner, from the farming of the fibers up to the production of the textile. Because it is organic, it has no harmful effects to the users as compared to the conventional textiles. These can also be recycled without harming the environment. Most organic textiles are made up of organic cotton. This means that it is farmed without any use of pesticides, fertilizers, genetic engineering, sewage sludge and other chemicals.

However, for an organic textile to be labeled organic, it has to pass through a series of evaluation. It must be certified by an accredited independent organization.

Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS)

The Global Organic Textile Standard or GOTS is the standard set to determine whether a fabric is organic or not. This standard is used to make sure that consumers will be assured that the organic textile they purchase is really organic, from the harvesting of raw materials to the labeling. It is also to assure that the manufacture of these textiles is environmentally and socially responsible. It covers the area of production, processing, manufacturing, packaging, labeling, exportation, importation and distribution of all organic fibers.

When the products pass the criteria, they are to be labeled “Global Organic Textile Standard.”

Benefits of organic textiles

Organic textiles are no doubt very beneficial to both human health and the environment. Because it has a controlled or guarded methodology of growing, processing and use, organic textiles offers minimum impact to the environment. The less use of chemicals also assists in maintaining the ecological balance and increasing soil fertility. Furthermore, no chemicals or synthetic procedures are involved in the entire process which is why it gives less health problems to farmers and workers. It is also more convenient to them because lesser water is required and there is also less pollution to natural body of waters. To the consumers, there is more satisfaction and no health hazards.
