You were so excited when you first bought that CD storage cabinet. It was like you were graduating high school and going off to college. It was piece of furniture that represented the time and money had invested in your CD collection. Well, many years later, maybe that cabinet is not looking as good as it did. Maybe you have outgrown it and now it sits in the corner or in the basement. What else could you use this for?

  1. If your CD DVD storage cabinet is simply tired and looks old, but you still use it and it meets your needs, consider upcycling it. This is a new term that means take something old and instead of recycling it, rehab it and make it fresh and new again. Take all the contents out of the cabinet. Wipe it down both inside and out (don't forget the dust bunnies clinging to the underside). Tighten up all the screws on the unit. Now, either repaint the entire cabinet using spray paint cans, or buy a furniture refinisher at the hardware store that will bring a stained wood piece of furniture back to life. You may be surprised to see that is the same cabinet.
  2. Empty all the contents. Move or remove some of the shelves make it a book shelf. Since CD storage cabinets evolved from simple book shelves, this should be a simple conversion back. Plus if it has doors, what a great way to hide your random book collection when company comes over.
  3. Buy a new CD cabinet or DVD stand, but use this old one to store a part of your collection such as your old VHS tapes. This may be a great way to segregate your media collection, especially if you use one type in one area and the other in another area. Make sure the shelves in your current unit will accommodate the new media type (most will).

Repurposing or upcylcing your old wood CD storage cabinet can be a rewarding and easy way to get some additional years out of this cabinet.
