Types of Outboard Motor Clearance Sales

There are actually many different types of gimmicks outboard motor companies use to promote their sale prices.  You might find steep discounts on them when they fall into any of these basic categories.

Year End:  Many manufacturers, including Mercury, Nissan, Evinrude, and Yamaha run end of year closeout sales.  Virtually all major makers have an end of the year clearance sale where they attempt to make room for the current model year.  Discounts are generally given based on the size of the outboard motor, but it will vary greatly.  Some stores will add discounts to sweeten the deal from boat dealers and marinas, so be on the lookout for those types of sales and discounts.

Non-Current:  You can actually find brand new outboard motors that are several years old.  I purchased a Monarch hull quite a few years ago that was new, but was actually three years old.  They are different from automobiles in this way, as you never see that happen with cars and trucks.  It is not uncommon to find some great deals on non-current engines, which will help you save a ton of money on your next boating purchase.  If you find something more than one model year behind, it is a great opportunity to haggle and save a ton of money.  Expect higher discounts as they get older.

Extended Warranties:  Sometimes manufacturers will offer extended warranties in lieu of a steep discounted price.  Many buyers actually prefer this to getting a price reduction, since it can save a lot more money if there are any issues with the cheap outboard motor on clearance.  You will find these deals at almost any authorized dealer of the brand you prefer.

Scratch and Dent:  On occasion, an outboard motor will be put on clearance because it has some form of damage or defect in the finish.  This is a really great way to get a big discount on your purchase, since you will know that the engine is still mechanically sound.  If the prop has substantial damage, you might want to replace it.  If the hood or shaft has a minor scratch, scuff, or mar in the finish, you can use it to haggle on price and get discounts that are greater than clearance pricing.

Going Out of Business:  If there are local marinas and authorized dealers in your area, it might be a good chance to find a steep discount on your next boating purchase.  If you are looking for a 3hp motor or 200 horsepower one, you will be able to find them at greatly reduced prices.  This is a really good way to find them for sale for a lot less money, especially if you are looking for a boat package.  At going out of business sales, you will have limited options because they cannot order more from the manufacturer, so it is generally limited to stock on hand at the store.

Major Rebates:  The most common form of rebates is to give back a certain amount of money for each horsepower of the engine.  This is a very common tactic used by some of the most well-known manufacturers.  If you are buying a larger outboard motor, the saving will sound better, but on smaller one, the percent off you will save is generally greater.  At the end of the day, the only thing that really matters is the bottom line, I suppose.  Just find out what the final price is and determine if the discount is substantial enough for you to buy.

Best Places to Shop

You have more options than you probably realize when you are shopping outboard motor clearance sales for great bargains.  There are plenty of places that have them up for sale, so you can shop around for the very best bargain and save some money.  In the list below are some of the places you will want to shop for the best deals.

Dealerships:  Outboard motor dealers are the primary place that people think to look.  When you deal with authorized dealers, you will get any manufacturer discounts that are taking place and have a place to go if you have problems and need repairs or some sort of customer service after the sale.

eBay:  This is a surprisingly good place to shop.  Many people buy them when they find them at super steep discounts and sell them for a profit.  This might make it sound like you are spending too much, but you are still likely to do better on pricing than you will find at most dealerships.

Amazon:  Do not expect to find large outboard motors on clearance, but you can find ones that are 15 horsepower or less.  They sell Coleman and Mercury, just to name a couple.  Take a look and see what you can find online at this site.  You just might find the best deal possible for what you are trying to get.

Direct from Manufacturer:  On occasion, factories that make them will have events open to the public.  You can find reconditioned, refurbished, and scratch and dent sales with these places from time to time.  It is a really good option to keep in mind if you live anywhere near one of the factories that make them.

You have a great chance to save a lot of money when you find an outboard motor clearance sale.
