Outdoor Rugs
When many people think of an outdoor rug, they think of Astroturf. For a long time, this was pretty much the only option for porches and patios. But in the last few years, a new wave of outdoor rugs has hit the market. Gone are the days of fake grass on your porch or patio!
But why does anyone want a rug on their porch or patio at all? There are a number of reason to have them, from practical to decorative. Among the practical uses of an outdoor rug is traction. Concrete, and even wood decking, can be hazardous to walk across when wet or icy. But with a large outdoor area rug, your walkway from front door to front steps can be completely covered and secure traction provided during even the worst weather.
Outdoor rugs, like doormats, also serve as a catch-all for dirt, leaves, and other debris which would otherwise be tracked into your home. Unlike indoor carpet, outdoor rugs are made to get wet, so much of what gets on them will wash away with the rain, or they can be cleaned with a garden hose.
Outdoor rugs also provide cushioning, which can be a real bonus on concrete patios. If someone spends a lot of time standing on concrete, such as to barbeque, the feet, knees and legs will quickly begin to ache. A thick rug, however, provides enough cushioning that much of that pain can be eliminated. They're also great if you have kids that like to play on the porch; they are more comfortable to sit on than bare wood, and they eliminate injuries from splinters.
Outdoor area rugs also provide protection for expensive decking. While they will not keep decking from getting wet, they do protect it from the sun, which can actually be harder on wood than water. They also protect it from scratches from furniture; if you have ever had to re-stain a deck because your patio furniture has scratched the finish off the wood, an area rug under your furniture is a must.
Finally, outdoor rugs are simply stylish. Large porches, patios and decks can look empty and unused, but a large area rug will not only fill the empty space, but serves as a focal point for a furniture or dining grouping. And because they come in as many different styles and colors as indoor area rugs, you can add a splash of color and style to your outdoor living space.

Outdoor rugs are the latest trend for home accessories for outdoors or indoors. I even use an outdoor runner on the walkway from my home to the garage when it starts to get icy out so I do not have to worry about slipping. They are also great indoors for high traffic spots like foyers, or spots where things can be spilled like the kitchen and laundry room. The great thing about outdoor rugs is you really can't tell a difference between them an indoor rugs since they are no longer like astro-turf. Polypropylene is great because it is stain resistant but unbelievably comfortable.
