Overcome Anxiety And Stress With Meditation

By | Jul 29, 2010 | 0 Comments | Rating: 0

There are many ways to overcome anxiety, stress, and depression. Unfortunately, most of these methods are aggressive and intrusive. The best way to overcome or at least reduce the effects of negative emotions is with a small session of meditation everyday.

Meditation is not just for the far-east anymore. There have been several studies done over the last several years that show meditation helps in many different areas. Those who spent anywhere from five to twenty minutes a day showed significant reduction in stress levels, anxiety, and felt an improved sense of well being.

When practiced everyday, those who meditate show improvement in as little as one week. There is something about just getting away from it all, and not worrying about anything for some time everyday. Sometimes the bills, kids, and school and other stresses in life can severely build up over time. You may think you are too busy to take time everyday for meditating but you actually end up with more time.

Meditation can be very soothing and relaxing. After a session of meditation, one often feels refreshed and rejuvenated allowing for greater productivity. This is like hitting the reset button; you end up saving time by being more focused and effective. Many people evenovercome anxiety, depression, and other more serious issues after a period of meditating. Often, we let the stresses of our lives pile up slowly, sometimes for many years. We do not take the time we need to get away from it all. Eventually these stresses add up to the point of a breakdown.

Meditation offers that daily pressure relief valve and can stave off the more serious issues that occur from not taking care of our well being.

How to meditate:

There are literally thousands of techniques out there on how to meditate. Basically, you just need to try some different things and find what is most effective for you. Here are some basic guidelines that can get you started.

One: Get away to a quiet location where you will not be disturbed.

Two: Set a timer for small time periods at first, around five minutes, then slowly build up to fifteen or twenty minutes.

Three: Try a few different techniques. Some focus on breathing, some say mantras, some are completely silent; see what works best for you.

Four: Meditate in the same location most of the time. Having a special location just for meditation is a great idea. Immediately when you get into your space, after awhile you will begin to get into "state" simply going to your spot. The space doesn't have to be anything particularly fancy, just that it is your space where you can be left in peace.

There is something magical about meditation. There is definitely a spiritual aspect to it but you don't have to be religious or spiritual to do it. You may find however, over time, you might begin to have what can only be described as spiritual experiences. Give it a shot for thirty straight days and see if you can overcome anxiety and how quickly you start overcoming depression, or who knows, maybe one day you will even obtain enlightenment.
