Paducah, KY - Quilt City USA
Paducah is known as Quilt City
USA and is home to the National Quilt Museum. Each year, thousands of quilting
enthusiasts descend on this quaint Kentucky city for the annual quilting
convention, held in the Spring. In fact, 2009 was their 25th Anniversary AQS (American
Quilter's Society) Quilt Show & Contest. The annual event consists of a
juried exhibit of some of the most beautiful and creative quilts created, as
well as merchant booths and workshops.
If you are
planning to attend an upcoming Quilt Show, or are just interested in enjoying
the history, art, antiques and relaxing amidst the dogwood blooms, here's some travel tips you may find helpful.
Where to stay:
Paducah has
several Bed & Breakfasts
to choose from, as well as approximately 30 nationally known mid-range hotels
& motels. If you are going to be attending the annual AQS Quilt Show,
you'll need to make reservations early! Check out Paducah Harbor Plaza or the
Fisher Mansion for their hospitality and charm.
Getting around:
You can use the
free trolley to access Downtown and the Lowertown Arts District, including the Quilt
Museum, Finkel Building and the Expo Center. The downtown shops, museum and
restaurants are all within walking distance of each other. Car rentals, tour
buses, and even Segway rentals are available. Maps of Downtown, the Arts

Weather:
Paducah in April
averages temperatures between a high of 68 º and a low of 47 º. A light jacket or
sweater is suggested for the evening or early morning hours.
Events:
Every Spring,
the town comes alive with the annual Quilt Show, but this charming town has
events throughout the year that including new or featured exhibits at several
of the galleries as well as the Quilting Museum, Writer's Groups and Open Mic
Nights, the Kentucky Senior Games, Paducah Symphony concerts, and more. Even if you're not a quilting enthusiast,
there is plenty of history, charm and hospitality to enjoy in Paducah. Be sure to check out Paducah's Visitors

Paducah KY sounds like a good place to visit. Great article!
I would love to visit. Handmade quilts are beautiful.
I've been all over 'Duker and never new about the quilt museum (I know it's a major disposal site for radioactive waste). Next time I'm in the big town, I might check it out. A thumb for digging up something little known.
