Pancreatic Cancer Is Often Diagnosed Too Late

Since the deaths of Steve Jobs and Sally Ride, pancreatic cancer has been very much in the news. Cancer of the pancreas has a very low survival rate. In fact, 75 percent of people diagnosed with this deadly cancer die wi

The pancreas is a complex organ with many different types of cells in it. Each of these cell types may give rise to different types of tumors. The correct diagnosis of the tumor type is important since the prognosis for survival is dependant on the tumor type and surgical removal of some tumors in the pancreas can be associated with a normal life span. Often the type of tumor that is present in the pancreas can be diagnosed from specialized studies such as radioisotope studies and CT scans.

Pancreatic Cancer Often Escapes Detection

There are many different types of tumors that can develop in the pancreas. A specialist can evaluate your tumor and determine which type of  it is.  Nearly 85% of patients have a very aggressive type of tumor called adenocarcinoma of the pancreas.  On the other hand, tumors that are sometimes curable are found in about 15% of patients. An evaluation in a center that is experienced in the treatment of pancreatic cancer is important for determining the treatment you will need for pancreatic tumors.Because there are very few warning signs, pancreatic cancer often times escapes early detectio

Also, when people do experience symptoms, they are usually in the form of muscle aches and back pains which can be attributed to other problems. In addition, there are currently no screening processes for the detection of pancreatic cancer. About all you can do to prevent it is to watch your diet and take supplements such as Milk Thistle.

Pancreatic cancer is extremely resistant to chemotherapy and there are only 3 chemo drugs that are approved by the Food and Drug Administration to treat it. While the best treatment is to remove the tumor via surgery, only about 15 percent of cases are detected in time to perform it. According to the National Cancer Institute, less than 10 percent of pancreatic cancer cases are diagnosed before the cancer has spread to other organs in the body.

The purpose of the pancreas is to produce pancreatic juices. In turn, these juices contain enzymes that help break down the food you eat. The juices then flow through a system leading to the main pancreatic duct. The digestive juices then flow into the duodenum, the first part of the small intestine, to enable digestion of all three types of food products; proteins, carbohydrates, and fats.

Your Diet MUST Include Fruits, Vegetables and Fiber

The pancreas is also a gland that makes insulin and other hormones. These hormones enter the bloodstream and travel throughout the body. They help the body use or store the energy that comes from food. For example, insulin helps control the amount of sugar in the blood. This is precisely why it is so important to maintain a proper diet, enhanced with dietary supplements to keep your body healthy enough to fight off sickness and disease whenever it occurs. Your diet MUST include fruits, vegetables, and other foods that contain lots of vitamins, proteins and fiber. Foods such as spinach, broccoli, apples, oranges, tomatoes, bananas and dark, leafy vegetables. Fish and lean meats also provide the body with

omega-3 fatty acids, which help promote healthy body functions.

In addition to keeping your pancreas healthy with the right foods and supplements, there are a few other things you can do to keep it that way. For example, you should keep your weight in a desirable range (check your BMI - You can easily do so right on the internet). Also, don't overload your body with sugar, get plenty of exercise, limit your alcohol consumption and refrain from smoking.
