Perception: Are You Ugly or Are You Beautiful?

By Edited Sep 26, 2016 0 0

What does it mean to be ugly? Beauty is said to be in the eye of the beholder. Could that be said also of ugliness? Is what is considered ugly also in the eye of the beholder? The irony is that some people really find themselves beautiful when others from the outside might disagree. Does self confidence erode the notion of ugliness? Is what we perceive to be ugly due to culture and taste?

What is ugly?

Ugly can describe a physical trait and it can also be used to describe personality traits. Someone could be physically attractive but at the same time could be considered ugly because of his personality. This could explain why many pretty celebrities never find it hard to get a partner. However, they find it hard to maintain a relationship. This could be due to their ugly character or personality. A person is only pretty or attractive until you start living with him. Hence, what is ugly is skin deep. On the other hand, there are people who are considered ugly. That is to say they are not physically attractive. Nevertheless, they become beautiful once you get to know them. Does it imply that our eyes play tricks on our mind or vice versa? These two situations highlight the difficulty in defining what being ugly is. Basically there is more to it than meet the eyes.

Confidence and Ugliness

There are people who might be considered physically ugly or unattractive but appealing. Those who ooze confidence tend to have a certain charm to them. They appeal because they compensate for their looks with their confidence. They have a thing the French call "je ne sais quoi". It cannot really be described but it is appealing and transcends physical beauty.

Culture and Ugliness

If you are obese in today's size zero world, you are mostly perceived as ugly. Some will say you have a pretty face but have an ugly body. In other parts of the world, the bigger you are, the more attractive you will be considered. A size zero woman will be considered ugly because she does have enough "meat". The current slang "Bootylicious" defines a round woman with assets in the right places.

If you feel you are not attractive enough, you have to try and work on your personality and be nice. The more people around you perceive your beautiful character, the more you will feel good about yourself. You need to also work on the way you see your imperfection. Everyone feels insecure about their looks. Top models are not immune to this feeling. There is no need to exaggerate your imperfections. What you might find unattractive in yourself might be a turn on for another. Beauty is really in the eye of the beholder. You don't have to torture yourself because men or women don't fall over when you walk by. They hardly do that for celebrities so, why should you be too concerned.

Another important thing is your personal appearance. If you try to dress well and modestly and use makeup or other fashion item judiciously, you will feel good about yourself. If you feel good about yourself, you will walk tall and ooze confidence. People are generally attracted to confident individuals. You determine how beautiful or ugly you are. What others do or say does matter because it mostly depends on you.
