There are many different types of coffee mugs. Many are made from ceramic or porcelain, however there are actually many nice plastic coffee mugs available too, most of which are actually safe to use in the microwave. In fact, sometimes they can be even safer to use in the microwave than poorer quality, cheap ceramic mugs which can sometimes heat up to the point that they are too hot to grab by the handle when heated in the microwave.

A popular style of plastic coffee mug is the polymer mug. While these are not actually shatter proof-they will crack or break if dropped on a hard floor-they are usually quite a bit more sturdy than many ceramic mugs. They come in a variety of different sizes, shapes and colors. Frequently they are all one color however it is possible to find some great designs on polymer coffee mugs as well.

If you are looking for something to give as a gift, and you would like something that is somewhat personalized, you will find many online retailers offering to make personalized mugs sets for you. If you are not sure what to personalize a mug with or how to go about designing something, there are many different designs you can look through online. There are personalized mugs that are specifically designed to give for special occasions, such as for birthdays, mother's day or father's day and even the personalized plastic travel mug. There are also mugs that are designed to give to a teacher or a grandparent or your boss at work! So, if all else fails you can pick up something that has been pre-designed in this way.

However, it is often much more fun to personalize the mugs yourself and it is possible to do so fairly cheaply. Scan the picture and submit it, and you will have a very personalized mug to give to the child's grandmother that will be cherished for years. You could also make a set of "his and hers" mugs for a couple by placing their photo on their own cup.
