Photos and Interesting Facts About the Moon

By Edited Jul 28, 2015 3 4

Over the years our comic strips have come up with so many fictional characters and ideas and going to the moon, was one of them. We never believed them, although they were fun to read.

Man has since proved that many of these unrealistic dreams and fantasies that we thought unbelievable then were doable.

The moon has fascinated everyone for centuries. Astronomers have also been studying our universe and its satellites while photographers have tried to capture images of the moons hidden secrets through their camera lens.

Did you know that the moon is Earths only Satellite and believe to have formed 4.6 billion years ago? Long before my time that is for sure.

Another thought is that it is the fifth largest natural satellite in the Solar System.

Myths and Fantasies

Myths and fantasies created from a variety of sources about the moon.

For instance:

  • Werewolves come out of the moon
  • Full-moon can cause lunacy
  • Chinese folklore says that the moon brings love
  • February is the only month in the year that a full-moon may not happen
  • Is moon round – No it is egg-shaped
  • The Earth rotates about 1600 kph compared to the moon which rotates slower at 16 kph.

Man or Bunny in the moon

Have you ever wondered why they say you can see the man in the moon? To me I think it looks more like a rabbit with its two ears, head and the body.

Let me know what you think it looks like.

Eight Phases

Did you realize that there is actually eight phases of the moon? These take place throughout each month.

• New Moon - this is the first phase when side of moon facing earth not lit by the sun

• Waxing Crescent - is the start of the growing illumination
• First Quarter - Less than half lit up
• Waxing gibbons – Half is lit up and growing bigger
• Full -  a full moon occurs when the side lit up from the sun is facing the Earth, completely lit up
• Waning Gibbons - Waning means the illumination is shrinking, less lit up by the sun.
• Last Quarter – Half lit up by the sun, illumination growing smaller
• Waning  -  slowing shrinking from view

Moon Visible Day and Night

Moon visible during the day

Why can you see this both during the day and night?

This is because it is a natural satellite and its surface is white which makes it reflective. In other words, it reflects the sun's light from the other side of the earth like in a mirror. Then as the moon orbits around the earth, it becomes closer to the earth at full-moon and is opposite the sun making it less visible in the evening and easier to see during the day.

How far is the moon away from the Earth?

Various sources suggest that when it is closest to earth it is 363,104 km and the biggest distance away is 405,696 km.
Therefore saying on an average it is 384,392km away.
The reason this distance changes is because the Moon takes an elliptical orbit around the Earth.

These are ideal and even double as a walking stick when walking over rough terrain. And are so much lighter to carry.

Importance of Tripods

I know how frustrating it is to lug a tripod with you when out walking and trying to capture that special shot. It does not matter what you are hoping to shoot, it is the way our hand moves as we attempt to shoot that special image that causes the problem.

My mum has weak wrists and hates taking a tripod on her walking adventures while chasing images of birds. Although she has finally had to admit that a tripod does help. Instead of a heavy tripod she has settled on a Monopod type which is a bit like a stick that you can also use as a walking stick.

Canon Powershot SX50 HS Camers

I took all the photos in this article with my Canon Powershot SX50 HS Camera.

This camera has a very powerful 50x zoom so can capture those little birds further away that have alluded you before. Like any camera, you have to learn the fundamentals on how to best use it.
Because of the powerful zoom you need to use it with a tripod. I love this particular camera to get that special shot.

Blood Moon - Lunar Eclipse

A Lunar eclipse occurs when the Earth's shadow reflects off the moon or blocks the sun's light. If you missed this recent one on the 8th October 2014 then be ready for the next one on 4th April 2015.

Astronomers and photographers were fascinated all over the world, fighting to capture that perfect image of the blood moon.  Some countries had a better vantage point than others.

We tried to capture a great image of the recent Blood Moon Lunar Eclipse. We live in Western Australia and the view was very disappointing this year, although I can at least say that we captured a hazy photo. It was definitely red.

Made more difficult because hundreds of mosquitoes attacked us as we tried to capture that perfect image.  My husband had to douse himself down with vinegar when we got back inside the house.  They just love him and he comes up in big lumps.  When that did not work he grabbed the Vick's vapor rub. That fixed it.

Tomorrow there is a partial solar eclipse. This is caused by the moon, of course.

Thanks Javrsmith, we are always taking all sorts of photos of the moon. But it is not easy some countries have better times to view the eclipses than others. I would love to get photos of comets as well.
