When it comes to running in cold weather this scares some people away, but it does not have to. If you prepare before hand, running in the elements can be tolerable and even enjoyable. A common misconception about running in the winter is that you have to wear heavy clothes to keep warm, but modern advances in technology have been able to make running gear that is light and provides enough heat for anybody.
Head and Neck â€“A beanie or fleece hat are great for keeping your head warm and they are normally lightweight to wear. A hat can be a plus if it has little edges on the side that you can pull over your ears to keep them warm. Sometimes if you do not need a hat just some ear warmers or a headband will be enough to keep your ears warm. The lighter the headwear the easier it is to tuck in your shorts or pants if you overheat. Arms â€“ If you know that it is going to be cold but might get warmer later, or even cool; arm warmers might be what you want instead of a full on long sleeve shirt. Not only will they keep you warm, but if you got too hot then you can take them off and tuck them in your shorts.

If you know that it is not going to be an extremely cold day or maybe of you leave in a warmer climate; some lightweight and thin running gloves are perfect to keep hands warm. If it gets too warm then these types of gloves can be easy to store and carry on your person if it gets too warm. When it's extremely cold, mittens or heavier gloves are a better choice because your fingers will share their body heat. When it comes to your hands you do not want them to start to get cold because then once it starts it is hard to get them warm again.

Legs â€“ A runner's legs generate a lot of heat while out on a run so they do not need as many layers on their lower body. Normally if its cold enough a pair of running tights under shorts do the trick, and even lightweight running pants can work if it is colder as well. If it is an extremely cold day you might want to put on an extra layer on your legs and if its windy, wear some track pants to block against the wind.
Feet â€“ Your feet stay pretty warm on a run, but your toes might get cold or even a tad numb. To keep your toes from doing that, you should use socks that take the moisture off your feet which will help keep them warm in the long run (no pun intended). When it comes to shoes you want to avoid shoes with mesh when you know where you're running in can contain a lot of snow, slush, or puddles since that's where water can get in your shoe the easiest. If running in snow is unavoidable, then investing in a pair of trail running shoes would be a good idea as they are somewhat water proof, and they provide better traction then normal shoes.
