Believe it or not, there are people who are addicted to plastic surgery. There are even television shows that feature people who have this plastic surgery addiction. Most of these people are women. They usually think that one more surgery or just one more fix will make them look perfect. More surgeries then lead to plastic sugery addiction.

Plastic surgery addiction usually starts when these people have a perfect image in their mind that they want to achieve. It might be a celebrity that they want to emulate or just an ideal picture of what they should look like. It is important to know that getting plastic surgery is acceptable even fashionable. But just like anything in this world, too much of anything is not good and it can negatively affect one's life.

Plastic surgery is very helpful for those who are born with deformities. Often those who have severe deformities undergo plastic surgery to help achieve a normal appearance. There are other reasons people get surgery such as for the sake of vanity. Many normal, even beautiful and good-looking people feel that they need to have plastic surgery. Studies have been done and show that 2 out of 3 people who get plastic surgery would come back for another surgery. This does not mean they have plastic surgery addiction.

Once they feel that it is safe and are comfortable with it, they return for another procedure in order to attain the perfect look that they want. One of the main reasons why plastic surgery addiction happens to a person is that people today are very visual. They want to attain the perfection that is put forth by the media. Populations who receive the highest number of procedures are the citizens of California and Arizona. Cosmetic surgery is often given for birthday presents in these states.

Celebrities are the common victims of this condition because they have lots of money to spend and an image to keep up. It becomes too easy for them to do multiple surgeries and that is one reason why they easily get sucked into this condition. It may seem normal for them to undergo series of plastic surgeries. One of the reasons is they do not see themselves as attractive as when they were younger. They want to achieve a perfect look that has been set in their minds. This condition is commonly called body dysmorphic disorder, which is an addiction to plastic surgery. It is considered a disorder because it becomes detrimental to their wellbeing.

No matter how attractive they look, they do not appreciate it. They seem to see themselves as just average looking or ugly, even if it isn't true. These people are not happy about how they look and in order for them to be truly happy they must be beautiful. Once they start to get plastic surgery they continue to go back for more. This plastic surgery addiction is hard to control because their happiness is now dependent on how they look.

You can identify if a person is addicted to plastic surgery by finding out a few things. If that person wants to have multiple surgeries in the same or similar areas of the body, then that can be a sign. Other people can be obsessed with looking like their favorite celebrities and will do anything they can to get that look and that might lead to addiction.

The source of this plastic surgery addiction is denial. They refuse to acknowledge or accept that not only do we get older, we also look older. Aging gracefully is a foreign concept. An inevitable result after many surgeries is a lifeless face. What people fail to realize is that nerves are damaged with every procedure. If you have enough of them then your face will be unable to make natural expressions. This truly creates a plastic look, as if they are wearing a mask. There are also severe dangers of the nose collapsing or partial facial paralysis. Also, just one botched surgery can ruin natural good looks forever. We have all seen people who would have been better off if they never had a single surgery. We look at them now and we can only imagine how much better they would have looked if they had allowed themselves to age naturally.

If you know someone who shows these signs it would be best to discourage them from getting more surgeries. The problem goes far deeper than what is seen on the outside. Plastic surgery is not cheap, it is quite expensive and multiple surgeries could cost a small fortune. The American Board of Plastic Surgeons also has guidelines for doctors to follow if they feel their patients are addicted to the surgeries. The American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery details in their policy that if a doctor suspects that their patient is addicted to surgery then everything possible should be done to talk them out of it.
