Play Dough Recipe

By Edited Dec 16, 2015 2 3

Play Dough
There are many recipes out there for homemade play-dough, and I have personally tried many of them with my kids, but this one is the best. Not only do you get to spend quality time making the play-dough with the kids, but you also save money by not buying the brand name play-dough. It is really easy and fun, so go ahead and enjoy it.

Things You'll Need:

2 cups of white flour

1 cup of salt

4 teaspoons cream of tartar

2 cups of water

2 tablespoons vegetable oil

Liquid food coloring

Plastic zip top bag or storage container with a lid

What you will need to do:

Step 1

In a large saucepan, mix the flour, the salt, and the cream of tartar together.

Step 2

Add the water and the oil into the dry mixture and mix well.

Step 3

Turn your stove top burner on to medium heat and stir the mixture constantly. It will start to firm up and get difficult to stir. When this happens, take it off of the heat and pour it out onto your counter.

Step 4

Knead the dough for a while until it cools down and starts to feel like play-dough. Don't worry if it doesn't have the consistency of play dough right away. It will take some time and kneading for it to turn out right.

Step 5

Once it is to the consistency you want, add food coloring to it and knead the color through the dough well. You can use just one color or split the dough up and make different colors.

Step 6

Play with it and have fun!

Step 7

When you are finished playing, store it in an airtight container in the refrigerator.

Tips and Warnings

* Make sure to keep the play dough in the kitchen and away from carpets. It is really a chore to get ground in play dough out of carpet, so save yourself the headache. Play outside if you can.
