Pointers to Keep in Mind When Applying Frosted Window Film

By | Aug 16, 2010 | 0 Comments | Rating: 0

Usually, when you buy frosted window film, fairly detailed instructions are given on the correct way to install it. These instructions will vary depending on the type of film bought. Some film has an adhesive backing, whereby you simply peel off the backing sheet and attach the film. Other are cling film, again you peel off the backing and simply press the film onto the window. Regular window film requires a few more steps to apply. Here are a few pointers that may help the process be much easier.

First of all, you will most likely need someone to help you apply the film. If you are only applying a small piece, for example a strip across the bottom of a window, you may be able to do it by yourself but if you are applying film to an entire window, even a smaller standard sized window you will need help. When arranging for someone to help you make sure that their time with you will be uninterrupted. Normally, if you invite someone over to help that will be the case but if you plan to have your partner help you do it at a time when the children are not likely to be around, and do not schedule it at a time when there are meals to prepare.

It is also important to make sure that the window and the film are kept moist at all times during the application. Failure to do so will result in poorly applied film that may not even stick that well to the windows. It is also much easier to make minor adjustments to the placing of the film if the window and film are kept damp during application.

When cutting the film allow a little extra around the edges. It is easy to trim later, once the film is up and it is much better than suddenly finding out that your film does not quite cover the entire pane. The film shrinks a little when it dries too, which is important to keep in mind when deciding how much to trim after the film is up.

Do not worry too much about bubbles in the film as you are applying it. Again, providing the film and window are kept damp, the bubbles can be pushed to the sides once the frosted window film is in place. If you cannot get them all the way out, at least move them over to the very edge of the film. You will find that they will naturally disperse as the film backing dries. A small squeegee is a good tool to have on hand to smooth the film afterward and move the bubbles to the edges.

If you follow the instructions given and keep these pointers in mind, you should not have any problems when applying Gila frosted window film to your windows.
