7 Ways Pomegranates Can Improve Your Life

It’s no secret that pomegranates have many health benefits.

Pomegranate benefits have been known since ancient times. It’s said that the pomegranate tree flourished in the Garden of Eden. The ancient Chinese believed pomegranate juice was a longevity drug. Hippocrates, the Greek physician and father of western medicine, is said to have treated let and eye inflammation with the pomegranate. In India, the pomegranate was used to cure dysentery and even leprosy.

Today, scientists are researching the health benefits of the pomegranate. So far they have found lots of promising evidence that pomegranates contain antioxidants, polyphenols and flavoids that help fight disease.

Pomegranate Antioxidants Fight Free Radicals That Cause Stroke, Heart Disease and Cancer

Pomegranate juice is helpful against free radicals. Just what are free radicals? Free radicals are molecules in your body responsible for disease. They cause your cells to become unstable and are responsible for aging, tissue damage, cancer, stroke, diabetes and heart disease. They enter your body through  smoking, pollution, alcohol, excessive sunlight and exposure to day to day chemicals.

Your body is often teeming with these creepy crawlies, slipping and sliding all around.

How do you get rid of these bugs? The main way is by eating a diet high in antioxidants that help clean the body. The pomegranate is jam packed with antioxidants such as vitamin C, vitamin E, beta Carotene, coenzyme Q and much more. These nutrients eliminate free radicals and help keep your body running smoothly. In fact, pomegranates have more antioxidants than wild berry, grapes, or tomatoes.

Pomegranates also contain tons of polyphenols. Polyphenols are the same healthy compound found in red wine. Yet pomegranates have more polyphenols then red wine or green tea. A diet high in polyphenols has been shown to reduce the risk of heart disease and stroke.

Study after Study Show the Many Benefits Of Pomegranates

This includes:

1) Cancer Prevention – The antioxidants in pomegranates may prevent skin, lung and prostate cancer.  The crushed and dried seeds of the pomegranate contain a rare 18 carbon fatty acid. This nutrient is shown to help prevent cancer. In one University of Wisconsin School of Medicine study, scientist noticed that the greater the amount of pomegranate extract, the quicker prostate cancer cells began to die. Another study says that pomegranates may reduce breast cancer by up to 87%.

2) Heart Health – In several human trials, the antioxidants in pomegranates have been found to be effective in reducing heart risk factors including arteriosclerosis and heart disease. Israeli scientist say that pomegranates protect the heart by preventing thickening of the arteries.

3) Reduce Alzheimers – A ten year study found that the strong antioxidants act to reduce the incidence of Alzheimer’s disease.

4) Oral health – The pomegranate is believed to possess antiviral and antiseptic properties. It helps maintain oral health, helps relieve cold sores, throat infections and even strengthen gums.

5) Quicker Healing – In one study, 10 patients were clogged arteries were given pomegranate juice. After a year, they healed better than the control group.

6) Lowering Blood Pressure – Several compounds in pomegranates can disrupt the biochemical leading to high blood pressure by preventing the degradation of an important vasodilating agent. One Israeli study showed that subjects with high blood pressure dropped by 21% after consuming pomegranate juice every day for a year.

7) Fertility – Around 470 A.D., the pomegranate was considered a fertility symbol in China and eaten by childless women. Today, scientist have found that pomegranate juice increases penile blood flow and improved overall erection health.
