Wedding Reception Music

Popular Dance Songs

Choosing the wedding music for your ceremony and reception can seem like a daunting task.  However, with a little help, you can put together the perfect playlist for you, your family and your friends.

When our last daughter got married, my husband spent days trying to decide which song he wanted for the father-daughter dance at the reception.  Meanwhile, our future son-in-law spent weeks putting together the play list for the band.  Since our daughter felt overwhelmed by all the other wedding arrangements, she left the music selection up to her fiancé.  It helped that the band sent him a list of songs that they already knew how to play.  However, our daughter’s fiancé still had to pour through the list eliminating the music that did not interest him, and adding songs that were his own favorites.  However, because they had chosen to use a live band, the music selection was somewhat limited.  Consequently, some of songs that our daughter and her fiancé had hoped to enjoy at their wedding were not available.  All in all, though, the band did a superb job of playing a wide variety of musical selections, and they were able to please most of the guests.  When the day of the wedding arrived, we were delighted both with the one song that my husband had chosen, as well as the music that had been selected by our new son-in-law.

You may want to order a CD of wedding music from Amazon or a similar site to help you get started.

Thanks for your comment! Since we have four adult, married daughters plus nieces, we've had lots of experience choosing wedding songs. Never the less, it's always a challenge!

My husbnad and I had a live band who learned to play our song-a southern rock classic. We did, however, do our first dance to a more traditional song on your list-Can't Help Falling in Love With You. Corey Hart had just remade it that year, which is why we picked it. Great article!

Terrific article and list with something for everyone. Our first dance was Anne Murray's May I Have This Dance For The Rest Of My Life. It would be fun to see what songs others used.

It is wonderful how many people remember the song that was played for their first dance. That is why it is so important to choose a good one!
