Portable Air Conditioners vs Ceiling Fans
Although portable air conditioners can be a little more difficult to adjust to a window since they have to fit in to the window or you need to use side brackets to hold it in place, they do give you cooler air then just a screened window and that is their purpose.
Ceiling fans on the other hand are usually in the room where you might be thinking about putting a portable air conditioner. If you are building or remodelling, it is always a good idea to have ceiling fans put in each bedroom and in the kitchen. Ceiling fans are often used in the winter to move the warmer air from the central heating unit faster to the attic. In the kitchen, ceiling fans are often used with central air conditioning to aid in moving the air.
Ceiling fans are nice in making the air in each room less stagnant but a portable air conditioner is more convenient if you are planning on moving or if you do not have ceiling fans installed where you live.
Because of their flexibility, portable air conditioners are the better choice over ceiling fans. If the room you want to have cooled already has ceiling fans then adding a portable air conditioner will only aid in your comfort. But, if the room you want cooled does not have ceiling fans, their installation would require an electrician and that can be costly and time consuming. A portable air conditioner can be put into any window with the proper side controls in practically no time at all and you can have the comfort of cooled air the same day.
Since ceiling fans require installation by an electrician and if your choices are ceiling fans or portable air conditioners then you obviously are talking about living quarters that have neither, then a portable air conditioner would be your best bet even if you are an electrician. Usually ceiling fans are wired in by the builder and portable air conditoners or central air is an added option.
Although, I have both central air and ceiling fans, if I had neither, I would have no problem in choosing a portable air conditoner because of the flexibility of its installation. And, of course, installation is a main consideration. With that in mind, I would also shop around carefully for a portable air conditioner that was listed by its manufacturer as having the proper coils to cool the size of the room I was planning on cooling.
