I have been on both sides of the coin when it comes to living arrangements.  I have been a homeowner with a larger family and also a renter when it was just hubby and I.

When I owned a home it had a built in dishwasher that I took for granted.  When I rented, it was an older apartment and there simply was not enough room to have a built in model.  Precious cabinet space would be lost.

I had come to terms with the idea of doing dishes by hand, the way I grew up doing them, and since there was only 2 of us now, it seemed silly to have a large dishwasher that would fill with dirty dishes over the week and run on the weekends.  Not only was that a smelly idea, I usually needed something that was in the rack inside if left for days!

I started researching smaller models and portable floor models, but then I came across these countertop dishwashers that you simply place on the counter beside the faucet and sink and this way you can use the hottest water from the tap to really get those dishes clean at the end of the day.  This way you are not running a larger machine with precious few dishes in it.  This is a power saver.

I love the idea of using super hot water for cleaning, and since I am not a fan of rubber gloves, the water I don’t think was hot enough to really get them clean when I did them by hand.  This way you wash a full load, and can hide it when done.

SPT Countertop Dishwasher

This is a popular model that I have been researching.  What I really like is that it is only 17.25 inches high so no worries about it hitting the upper cabinets (unless you have an odd design this should be standard but you should measure to make sure!).  It is front loading and because it is at counter height it is easy to go from table to rack.  It holds a few place settings and all you have to do is hook it up to the faucet at the kitchen sink.  It can use up to 148 degree hot water.

The downside to these portable units including floor models is that they will take over the kitchen faucets, so make sure you are finished with the kitchen for a little while so it can do its cleaning job.

Magic Chef

This has a 70 inch inlet hose, which is something you should also consider especially if you can’t place the unit directly by the sink.   It also has an “anti-flood” switch just in case! It can be left on your counter or stored somewhere else.  It is nice if you can leave it there and simply place your dishes right into the unit when you are done your meal.

One of the reviews stated that using a Portable countertop dishwasher really helped as she had nasty back problems making it difficult for her to stand at the sink and hand wash.  You don’t have to have a large family to enjoy the benefits of a machine.

Danby 18" Wide Floor Model

I know this article is all about countertop models, but I included this as I wasn’t sure how much counter space I could dedicate to a counter dishwasher.  I then noticed that floor models on wheels; don’t have to be massive either.

This model is 18 inches wide, on wheels and still needs to attach to your kitchen faucet and plug in, but it doesn’t take up much room either.  It would be perfect for small kitchens, the office, or cottage even.  Very economical to run but still offers all the cycles the big boys do.

I figures when not in use it can sit at the edge of my kitchen and also be a little extra counter space.

Don’t Give Up on the Idea Especially if you are Downsizing!

After much research I discovered you don’t really have to lose out on these conveniences simply because the household is smaller in numbers, or the house itself is smaller.  Many people as I have read have a very hard time standing for long periods of time in front of the sink to wash even just a few dishes, especially seniors.  It is nice when they can simply place dishes in a portable countertop unit and then hook it up with a very easy quick connect and hit a button and then leave the kitchen.

You are not wasting as much water or power using a smaller unit that you fill compared to a larger unit that you may run before it is full, which can be wasteful.  You have the option of leaving it sitting on the counter or storing it away as they are portable and not heavy.   We tend to leave racks of dishes drying on the counter anyways, just replace that rack with one of these portable dishwasher models.

Don’t Give Up on Convenience

Just because you downsized or are renting, you don’t have to give up valuable cabinet space to enjoy freedom from doing dishes by hand.   Save your back!
