Potty Training Tricks for Boys - To Sit or To Stand?

By | Aug 3, 2010 | 0 Comments | Rating: 0

An age old question answered: Sitting down or Standing up?

Potty training boys can become a challenging task, especially if you begin by asking them to stand while peeing and sit while pooping. This can become quite confusing for the toddler, thus delaying the potty training process. Many parents do not understand whether to teach their boy to pee standing or in sitting position. Both ways are fine as long as your boy is comfortable. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that male toddlers should be encouraged to sit down while urinating. This helps in potty training as he has to take one position for both bowel movements and urination, thus avoiding confusion. This also greatly reduces the mess boys create while peeing standing up.

It's best to teach your son to sit down while urinating till the time they are fully potty trained. Once he begins to understand, you can explain that he can now pee standing up as well.

Tips to Help Boys Go Potty

Teach your boy to signal when he needs to go for potty. There is no ideal stage at which potty training can be started. For the potty training to be effective consider the developmental aspects of your boy. Does he understand he must go to the toilet for potty? Is he mentally ready to understand this part of his routine? If yes, then you can start his potty training. It is important to remember that just because another child trained early, does not mean he is any smarter than your kid.

Keep the training part simple. Teaching to pee in standing position and poop while sitting is definitely going to create confusion. You can buy a potty seat to help your boy in his potty training.

You must also speak to the daycare and ensure that they follow the same methods when taking him to the toilet. Though both method of urinating are ok, teaching one method will make sure that potty training remains consistent.

Trick for Teaching Boys to Go Potty

A stepstool can be used when potty training your boy. Place it in front of the toilet and ensure that its not moved. This may sound simple, but boys are likely to move around the stepstool. You must explain it to your toddler that stepstool is to help him go potty and should be there when he needs it. This will ensure that there is no last minute dragging of the stool while he tries to hold it in.

Boys generally become gender aware by the age of three. Once they begin to understand a little, they are very likely to get trained quickly and go potty on their own.
