Power Packed Foods that contribute to a Healthy Living

Whether we like it or not, the food we eat contributes to the outlook of our lives. Not all foods are good for us even if they taste and look nice. The fact of the matter is that if want to live healthy lives, we need to contribute to it by paying attention to the foods that we eat and make sure we make a conscious decision to choose foods that aid the good quality and life expectancy of our lives.

I have listed below examples of ten power packed foods that assist in giving us a good quality of health.

These are the most common types of power foods and generally, we are encouraged to have five different types of
fruits a day. This is not by mistake, fruits are known to produce antioxidants which help in eradicating damage in the body and eliminate the risk of cancer. Some fruits contain vitamin C and A which are some of the most important vitamins for our health because of the boost it gives our immune system amongst other things. Blueberries are an example of power packed foods that contain a very high amount of antioxidants.

Flax seeds
These are full of omega-3 fatty acids. The seeds also have omega-6 and omega-9 fatty acids which assist in
combating high cholesterol, diabetes and heart diseases. Creative ways of using the flax seeds is to have them ground or purchase the ground one and add to pancake mix, sprinkle it in your yoghurt, eat with cereals or just add to fruit smoothies.

This is increasingly becoming popular because it is now known that it could assist in lowering blood cholesterol.
Apart from this, oatmeal is known to contain fibre which contributes towards keeping our blood sugar constant and hunger at bay. Oatmeal can be taken as a cereal.

There are kinds of beans that come under the general beans category such as kidney beans, chickpeas and lentils -
they all have one thing in common - they are high in protein. If you are the type that gets gas as a result of eating beans, dont let this put you off, there is a solution. Soak the beans prior to cooking and this will dispel some of the gas contained inside. Beans contain a lot of fibre and helps in keeping the digestive system healthy.

Nuts and Seeds
Just like beans - there are different types of nuts i.e. peanuts, Brazil nuts, almonds, pistachios and walnuts to
mention a few. They do contain fat, but it is the type of fat that is good for you - in addition to that, they also contain protein and have the ability to lower ones cholesterol.

Just like flax seeds, these contain omega-3 fatty acids that contribute towards reducing the risk of heart
disease. The wild salmon contains fats that are good for us and are known to improve the health not only in adults but in children as well. Apart from having a lovely taste, salmon is also rich in protein.

Allium foods
These are foods and vegetables such as leeks,garlic, shallots and onions. Garlic contains properties that assist
in lowering cholesterol. Some people prefer to use a bit of garlic paste when preparing their stews and soups, while some crush it in together with other spices. You can be very creative with garlic. Allium vegetables contain properties that shield the body from ailments and even the risk of cancer. In addition to that they are known to contribute towards lowering blood pressure and preventing blood clots. It is especially advantageous to eat these foods in their natural state where possible.

This contains calcium, vitamin B and protein - so there are a variety of benefits. Yoghurt also serves as an
alternative to milk - for those who cannot drink or do not like milk. The calcium contained inside yoghurt assists in building strong teeth and bones. If you are concerned about the fat contained in yoghurt, you can always opt for the fat free varieties. Live yoghurt is also beneficial in that it contains friendly bacteria which supports a healthy digestive system.

This has made the news lately and mostly for its discovery and benefits. Acai is rich in antioxidants and also
increases energy. It is normally sold as supplements or juice.

These contain antioxidants such as vitamin c and beta-carotene. Be mindful when using peppers because they come in
different varieties such as mild, sweet and hot. Peppers contain a capsaicin which in turn produces an anti inflammatory and pain relieving element. Peppers are also known to reduce the risk of cancer and heart disease. Peppers can be added to salads, side dishes, pizzas and all sorts - you can be creative.

There is a saying, that we are what we eat - hopefully one or two these power packed foods will take your fancy and you will not only enjoy eating them, but also the benefits attached to them.
