Alcoholism or alcohol addiction not only affects a person's health but also his or her working productivity and emotional state. If you are an alcoholic, do kick the nasty habit so as to make your life and the lives of people around you a better one. Today, there are many effective alcohol treatment options to suit the varying needs of different individuals. Generally, one form of treatment will suffice. Below is a list of the various types of alcoholism treatment options.

  • Pharmaceutical treatment for alcoholism. There are a few medications that are frequently prescribed by doctors to bring about sobriety to alcoholics. Currently, there are 3 types of medications approved by the Federal Drug Administration (FDA) for the treatment of alcoholism; Antabuse (disulfiram), Naltrexone (Revia) and Acamprosate (Campral). Antabuse functions as a deterrent to prevent a person from drinking alcohol as he or she will become sick upon ingesting alcohol. Naltrexone can suppress alcohol cravings and Acamprosate can relieve the withdrawal symptoms alcoholics usually experience upon abstaining from drinking. Among the various treatment options for alcohol abuse, this is almost one of the most hassle-free methods.
  • Alcoholism support groups. Support groups such as Alcoholics Anonymous provide a closely knit community of individuals who can share their experience and hope with each other so as to help one another to recover from alcoholism. Plenty of studies have shown that such support groups can help alcoholics to stay sober for a greater period of time.
  • Alcohol treatment facilities or rehab centers. There are plenty of rehab centers nationwide which offer alcohol rehabilitation and consultation services. Such treatment methods can range from inpatient treatment to outpatient treatment and counseling. Such rehab centers can help the alcoholics from developing the urge to drink. A rehab facility known as the sober living facility provides the alcoholic a safe place outside of rehab center to live in, before moving home so as to help the individual to slowly reintegrate back into society. Meanwhile, in the facility, he or she will have the support of other recovering alcoholics and yet have the freedom to work and go about his or her daily routine schedule. Among the different treatment options for alcohol addicts, this method is probably the most popular.
  • Outpatient treatment program. For alcoholics who are halfway in their recovery phase, this treatment program serves as an extremely beneficial assistance. In this program, the recovering alcoholic will simply live at home and go about doing his or her daily tasks. At the same time, the recovering alcoholic will meet up with a consultant to make sure the recovery stays on track hence preventing a relapse.

Above is a list of alcoholic treatment options and these alcohol abuse treatment options are some of the most effective treatments around. I hope this article has come in handy for you!
