Pros and Cons of Abeka Curriculum

By | Apr 5, 2011 | 0 Comments | Rating: 0

When looking at the pros and cons of Abeka curriculum, parents need to remember that Abeka is a Bible-based curriculum that was designed to be used in Christian schools. It was developed in cooperation with Pensacola Christian academy and is a major publisher of homeschool materials.

Pros:

  • Lesson plans are all laid out - parent knows exactly what to say when and what lessons their student is expected to complete.
  • Traditional school model using textbooks and workbooks that parents are used to using from their school days.
  • Lots of repetition - their workbooks use the spiral learning approach where they keep bringing up material that was covered in previous lessons in order to help your student remember the material.
  • Parents get a feeling of "getting it all done" and don't have to come up with their own lessons.
  • Christian, Bible-based  material
  • Easy to resell - as long as you don't hold onto their books too long, you can usually resell the books and get some of your money back.
  • Advanced material - usually one grade ahead of public school.

Cons:

  • High burnout rate - because Abeka tends to move at an accelerated pace and covers a lot of material in a year many parents and students find it hard to keep up the pace outlined in the lesson plans.
  • Expensive - one of the more expensive homeschool options especially if you choose their video program or academy.
  • Workbook pages in textbooks - students have to write out answers if parent intends on reselling the books.
  • Editions change often - if the parent holds onto the books for any length of time for possible use with younger students, chances are that Abeka will change editions and they won't be able to resell the books to get some of their money back.
  • Lots of workbooks to fill out and textbooks to read. Since this model works for the Christian school and the curriculum was designed for use in schools, students are kept busy reading and answering questions.

When looking at the pros and cons of Abeka curriculum, parents need to be sure to know their own children and how they learn best. Don't use a program just because another mom says it is the best thing out there. Keep your eyes open and pray about every curriculum decision. God created each member of your family and won't leave you in confusion if you ask him to help you make the right decision.
