Which Camera will you buy
Before I continue, I would just like to say that I use a Nikon camera, and love it. Although my mum is writing this particular, article. Therefore, it is from her perspective on the difference between their Nikon DSLR D3200 camera and the Canon Powershot camera.
My review of the Canon Powershot SX50 HS Camera
I am by no means a professional photographer, actually a novice myself, although my husband has taken thousands of photos of anything and everything. After using a Nikon D3200 camera with a Nikkor 18-105mm and a Nikkor 55-300mm lens, we found we wanted something a little different to capture that special photo of birds just that bit further away.
Therefore, after doing a lot of research we decided to buy the Canon PowerShot SX50 HS.
We have only had this one for two weeks and I am not sorry we bought it. I love that it is so light and I never have to mess about changing lenses when you see something moving in the bush to take that special image. Caught out so many times in the past, with the wrong lens on the Nikon camera and by the time we change it, the bird has flown away. It is so frustrating, and I can imagine how other people have had a similar problem.
This particular shot of the moon really amazed us. We had taken so many photos of the moon before with different cameras and lenses and this is the first time we have been able to capture so much detail. I will let you be the judge, tell me what you think in the comments below. Keep in mind that we are amateur photographers, and this was our first attempt with this camera. Virtually a fail proof shot.
Powerful 24-1200 Zoom lens
This Black faced Cookoo Shrike on the Power lines approximately 120 meters away. The Canon 50x Zoom is well worth buying for me to capture more bird photography images.
Features of the Canon Powershot SX HS
The Canon Powershot SX HS Bridge camera has a super zoom with a 50x zoom lens that is equal to a focal length of 24-1200mm. Believe me, that is a powerful little camera.
There are so many things on this camera to feature; it has a 12 megapixel back illuminated sensor, a 4.5 stop optical image stabilizer with intelligent IS technology with full manual controls, ISO-6400. With DIGIC 5 image processor, and comes with 12-bit RAW format support for that extra oomph.
You can also record that special action movie experience with HD stereo sound with a HDMI port. You can play them back and watch it on the 2.8-inch vari-angle LCD screen. As a first time user of the angle screen, I found it difficult to find the bird in the tree, on my first attempt, although I love it now.

Plus this camera has a powerful zoom lens that will capture images across the bank on the other side of the river. And it is still small enough to fit into your handbag (for the ladies).
Easy to use Camera
It is so easy to use and in my opinion, the best feature and selling point of this camera is its great capacity to zoom in with the whopping 50x optical lens, ranging from 24mm to 1200mm, which would cost you a small fortune to reach the same result with any SLR cameras.
This one saves you having to cart those heavy lenses; it is so small it will fit in a handbag. Use a tripod when using full zoom, to steady the camera like with any other camera. This camera will not disappoint, as you can use it anywhere and for all occasions.
When using the Macro IS or tripod mode, it automatically deactivates the image stabilizer.
Wink - that is right, you can set up this camera to take a photo when you wink.
Smile - this camera will take your photo as you smile when set up for this.
You can use this swivel screen as shown in the above picture. Or you can turn it around and using it in the normal way. Then when you have finished shooting your magnificent images you can turn it around so the screens protected from damage like in the picture above this one.
Pros and Cons
Pros of the Canon Powershot SX50
- The large zoom has to be the best feature of this camera
- It is light weight, a take anywhere camera, with no need for extra lenses
- Takes great action shots- when using the zoom without a tripod I would suggest you use it in sport mode or a quicker shutter speed. This will give you great shots, for birds, or moving objects.
- Good battery life
- You do not have to turn the camera on to view images. Press the playback button on camera.
- No audible noise when filming HD movies
- Manually lift the flash to operate. This prevents unwanted flash, which gives you the option.
Cons of the Canon Powershot SX50
- There is no hard copy Instruction manual. Everything is on a disk.
- The viewfinder is smaller than normal.
- The tripod screws are next to the sliding plastic door protecting the battery and SD card. Therefore, you have to remove the tripod to change the battery or SD memory card.
Conclusion: As I have only had this camera for two weeks I still have a lot to learn, although I love it. My husband bought this camera for me, now I am having trouble getting it away from him.
In my opinion, there is a need for the Nikon and other brands of SLR Cameras, although I prefer the Canon Camera. I know for a fact that I have never been able to get this type of photos with my Nikon.
I will add more as I experiment with this camera. Please leave your thoughts on this camera in the comments section below.

Plus the shoulder strap is removable.
Update after two weeks
I just had to come back and add a few more thoughts on this camera. The depth of the different photos that we can now shoot is incredible. We have never been able to get these results with photos with any other camera.
At present since the 7th February 2014 we have taken photos of the moon every night and they are so different. We took the photo below at 1.18 am. Loosing more sleep these days as the moon is later coming up. The night before we set the alarm for 2.30 am.
Its amazing the depth of the craters in some of our photos especially when enlarged. I cannot do that here or they would be too big and only show part of the moon.
This is another interesting observation. We can still get a good photo with the camera at 1-3 mm from the object. In fact we put a photo underneath the lens then took the photo. It showed the complete photo even though the photo extended at least two inches outside the lens.
I thought that was incredible. We have taken thousands of photos now and have used it on many different settings. So far we are very impressed. In fact I have to really battle to get my hands on it. So much so that he (my husband) mentioned that he may have to buy another one for himself.
Use a Tripod
If you are serious about taking great photos, then persevere with learning how to use a tripod. Your photos will be of a better quality with less blur from movement. I hate using a tripod, but no realize that my likes and dislikes are not important if you want good photos.
