A lot of people have a desire to become dog owners – and for those of us already in the know, who can blame them? Dogs make wonderful companions. They are patient and loyal, kind and playful.

In that light, it can make you wonder why not get yourself a dog?

But, like most pets, dogs take a bit of work and effort! You can't just get a puppy and then let it take care of itself. Dogs are not highly independent animals. They need their human companions to take care of them and this runs the gamut from brushing their teeth, to ensuring they have the right vaccinations, to feeding them, and even to tossing the frisbee on a daily basis.

When you think about the work and responsibility involved, it is no wonder that some people opt not to get a dog.

But there are ways that you can go about the process that make it easier. You can talk to friends who have dogs. You can meet with canine professionals such as dog walkers, dog trainers and veterinarians. Get their thoughts. Play with their dogs. And you will find that the information and experience will go a long way to helping your make an informed decision about acquiring a canine friend.

The other possibility is that you might want to consider a puppy starter kit. You get the dog, but you also get a well-stocked kit that will make owning your dog a whole lot easier. These kits, which are available from numerous companies, tend to run in the $100 range.

What do they include? A good puppy starter kit will include a leash and collar ideal for both training and walking. It will include soap and shampoo especially designed for keeping rowdy dogs clean and fresh-smelling. It will include some food geared towards a puppy's changing physical needs. It will include some treats. It will include a tooth brush and tooth paste. It will include nail clippers and related grooming tools. There should be a toy or two tossed in there as well.

And finally, it should include a good book about raising puppies. As any experienced dog owner will tell you, the process of owning and loving a dog begins with a positive puppy experience. That means you need to be prepared to achieve a good balance between training and playing. There are going to be ups and downs and you need to be ready for that.

Don't go into the experience blind. Educate yourself – and avail yourself of the tools that will make those early days a whole lot easier. Because the truth is, before you know it, your puppy will be a dog!
