Qualification to be a CNA Instructor in Indiana

Instructors for certified nursing assistant (CNA) classes must communicate and teach the information students will need to know to pass the licensing exam in Indiana to become a CNA. To ensure students across the state are taught the same concepts, Indiana has developed specific requirements to become a certified nursing assistant instructor.

License
The state of Indiana requires certified nursing assistant instructors to have a current license as a registered nurse (RN) in Indiana. An exception to this rule does exist for facility-based programs training their own employees to be CNAs. As long as the director of nursing for the facility is acting as the program director for the CNA course than a licensed practical nurse (LPN) is allowed to teach the actual class.

Experience
Two years of experience in nursing is required for an RN to be able to teach certified nursing aides. At least one year of the two years of experience must have been done in a long-term care nursing home facility.

Teaching Course
Nurses interested in teaching CNAs must first take and pass a training class for certified nursing aide instructors. This course ensures that teachers for nurse aides are presenting the same information to their students as teachers across the state. This ensures that the education is similar for all students, and each is prepared to pass the state licensing exam if they study and apply themselves. In addition, it ensures that any facility can hire a certified nurse aide from across the state and be confident of the training and knowledge they received.

Application
After completing the training course, prospective instructors can submit an application to be approved as a CNA instructor and begin teaching classes. Approval is granted by the Long Term Care Division of the Indiana State Department of Health.
